rehmwa 2 #34 July 11, 2005 QuotePM sent I have a friend from Iran. Good family, all educated and serious professionals, PhD, brother and sister are doctors etc, good connections at the time he moved. Yet he still came here. His story is a good one. Bet yours is too. ... Darius11 12 #35 July 11, 2005 Not really that intresting. just alot of changis. here is the pm i sent to john Hey John. We used to come out to East Hampton NY to visit my uncle when I was very young like around 6. In Iran once a male child reaches 13 he is not allowed to leave the country until he serves his military time (my older Bro. was 11 at the time). So the 2nd time we came back to the US the war between Iran and Iraq had gotten really bad. I was there threw the bombing raids but as soon as they started using Scuds my dad told us to go and stay in the US. With the scuds you had about 1-3 min warning there lack of aim was not an issue as the Iraqis bombed civilian targets with no problem at all but my dad was worried for my older bro. So I stayed here till I was 16 when the war had ended I went back to Iran. My green card had not yet been processed and we were having a very rough time. It was impossible for my dad to send money to us due to many restrictions. So when the war ended me and my mom went back. When I was 20 and 50 weeks old my mom received her green card and so did I because I was still not 21 I lucked the fuck out on that one man. I came here stayed for 8 months went back was going to get married but didn't and then decided I want to be here. I have been here since I was 21.I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain
Amazon 7 #36 July 11, 2005 Congrats to you Darius. It takes a lot of work to get through that process. Sometimes I wish it was mandatory for ALL to have to jump through the same hoops. Far too many people in this country do not know what it takes.. and therefore take their citizenship for granted. ( Like not voting) Sometimes I wish that a process put forward by Robert Heinlein in his book " Starship Troopers" was utilized. It would make citizenship by all citizens a more precious commodity. In his book you did not become a citizen unless you served your country/planet in some way. I think many of our modern immigrants do far more to serve this country than do some very old families who find ways to avoid any form of service. JohnRich 4 #43 July 11, 2005 QuoteWe used to come out to East Hampton NY to visit my uncle when I was very young like around 6... Wow! That's an amazing story. It sounded like something from a war refugee in WWII. In my experience, immigrants to this country who have been through experiences like yours, tend to appreciate America and its freedoms more than the average Americans who have been here for many generations. The old-timers tend to forget how valuable our freedoms are and take them for granted, even bitching about how bad things are for them. Guys like you know better, appreciate them greatly, and realize how important they are. Congratulations on your choice, and let's all hope that someday the oppressed areas of the world can reach the same state of freedom and opportunity that we have.
