"We're not afraid" website

Recommended Posts

I saw the creator of this website on tv this morning. It's pretty cool. It has a bunch of people from all over the world who have taken pictures of themselves with "we're not afraid" added to the picture somewhere. It was created after the London bombings and already has a bunch of pictures posted to it. There is also a place where you can donate to the relief fund.

I think we need some skydiving pictures on there! B|

I realize the people in London are going through a hard thing right now... but sites like this just seem like a waste of space to me.

Do they really think that terrorists are going to log on and look at the pictures thinking "OH NO, THEY SURE TOLD US!!!"?

At least the donation thing is useful...

I'm with you. I hate to be negative with something like this - if it makes people feel better, go for it. But it doesn't mean anything to the terrorists. I get the same feeling when I see on the news that Blair is signing a "condolence book". That means nothing to me.

Getting the fuckers responsible for the bombings, and everyone who helped them - now that would mean something!

These are pretty stupid statements. This is simply a way for people to feel good and positive as well as heal in a terrible time. It is a little like saying that a funeral is a waste of time just because it does nothing for the one who passed on.

This site is a positive thing in a negative time and it helps people feel better. It is about saying we will not be afraid. I doubt it was intended to be viewed by the terrorists.

Just because you disagree with my statement, does not make it a "stupid statement".

And you should note that I also said: "if it makes people feel better, go for it."

Being a non-afraid Londoner who still uses the tube every morning to get to work, I have to say I can't make up my mind on this one. On the one hand, it is good to see that lots of people are supporting us, on the other hand, messages from some places have more value than others.

Spaniards from Madrid (Madridians?), New Yorkers, people who had been targets of the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion, not the airforce!) and ETA are more powerful voices of support to me, as these are people who have also just got up in the morning and carried on getting things done like most Londonders. Messages from New Zealand feel hollow, no matter how well meaning they are. I doubt that people in Aukland sit looking at the plastic bag the person next to them on the bus put on the floor hoping for their own life that the person picks it up again when getting off the bus.

However those Madridians, New Yorkers, Basques and Germans do make me feel that I'm not the only person unable to ignore sirens while sitting on the bus or walking on the pavement the way I used to, hence make me feel more normal and more determined to keep getting on with life.

Then I will make it an opinion. I think these are stupid statements.

Okay then, if that is the philosophy you want to adopt...

My opinion disagrees with your opinion. Therefore, according to your philosophy, your statements are also stupid. So my stupid statement and your stupid statement cancel each other out.

Now where does that leave us?

It might hit home for some of those people more than you think or in different ways. For example, you might think what happened in London doesn't really affect me because I'm from Florida. But, I was on vacation in Germany on the day the bombings happened and had a plane ticket scheduling me to fly back into London the next morning and a train ticket into the city once I got there. We did look into changing our flights but finally just decided to go for it and took the plane, train and 3 Tube lines. I know the terrorists will never know that I showed them that I'm not afraid either, but I showed it to myself and I showed it to the Brits who were on the Tubes with me who saw me with all my luggage as a tourist who wasn't afraid to come back.
