Instead of a YMCA membership or a designated smoking area, they wanted help in learning how to read. Because many of the plant's employees primarily speak Spanish, their request was not unusual or unexpected, said Reba MacLagan, the HR director for the parachute manufacturer. Nor did she detect any shame. "Our employees are not afraid to tell us what they need," she said. MacLagan thinks she has found a model solution. Donna Wagner, a customer service representative is already tutoring another employee.
