Rebecca 0 #1 July 27, 2005 The mosquitos are out of control despite our best chemical efforts. I've heard that building a bat house on premises is a sure-fire way to clean up the bloodsuckers and other flying menaces. Anyone have experience with this? Is it really that easy, or is there something I should know? (Aiming for genius, i.e. learning from others' mistakes! ) you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk? Rebecca 0 #2 July 27, 2005 I found this: QuoteAmerica’s bats are an invaluable natural resource. Yet due to decades of unwarranted human fear and persecution, bats are in alarming decline. By putting up a bat house you are helping our bats find a home. You will also benefit from having fewer yard and garden pests and will enjoy learning about bats and sharing your knowledge with friends and family. As the primary predators of night-flying insects, bats play a vital role in maintaining the balance of nature. And, as consumers of vast numbers of pests, they rank among humanity’s most valuable allies. A single little brown bat can catch hundreds of mosquitoe-sized insects an hour, and a typical colony of big brown bats can protect local farmers from the costly attacks of 18 million root-worms each summer. Bats are not blind, and are actually very clean animals. They do not get caught in peoples’ hair or eat through the attic of your house. Bats will not interfere with feeding backyard birds, and they will not be disrupted by pets or children. Maybe I'll become a bat lover! Any enemy of the mosquito is a friend of mine! you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk?
lisamariewillbe 1 #3 July 27, 2005 Yes, there are plenty of recipes for a soy necter mixture, the bat house is very similar to a bird house.Sudsy Fist: i don't think i'd ever say this Sudsy Fist: but you're looking damn sudsydoable in this
Diversgodown 0 #4 July 27, 2005 My cousins have a cabin in Prescott, AZ. When we would stay there we would sleep in the attic area and at night dozens of bats would fly out of the Chimney it was pretty cool. They would never bother us at all. and my X-Girlfriend lived in Missouri at one point and when they moved into the house a bat came with the closet and she used to pet it and said it was really friendly. I say go for it build a bat house what have you got to loose but a pint of blood a day ***Glory Favors the Bold***

Shotgun 1 #11 July 27, 2005 I've been thinking of putting a bat house in our backyard too... Though I'm not sure if we even have bats where I live (near Perris, CA), since I haven't seen any. I lived in Austin, TX for a long time, and there are bats all over the place there - I always liked them, but I don't think they did much to keep the mosquitos away (as there were plenty of those around too). My mom just gave me the coolest snowglobe for my birthday - it has the buildings of Austin in it, and when you shake it up it has little bats mixed in with all the "snow" so that it looks like bats are flying all around the city (as they really do). It's so trippy. It looks seriously like a plague... just clouds and clouds of bats flying off. I have 2 tattooed on me, I am a member of BCI (Bats Conservation International www.BCI.org) I have a huge stuffed bat collection....etc. Anyway to get the best results you get from a bat house. It has to be at lest 25 feet in the air, a dark roof to collect heat, it should be facing in the sun all day (pointing it south works well) and if you can get some bat guano (sp?) at a health store to put inside the house to help attract. You need to make sure you put the house up before spring so it is there when they migrate north. I live in Austin, watching the bats fly out from under the bridge is amazing, They are great misunderstood animals. They don't get stuck in your hair, they do not spread rabies like most people think they do. Dogs are a higher rabies carrier than bats, bats are very clean animals. If they do contract rabies, they usually die within a half of an hour and they are usually flopping around on the ground, not flying after people to bite them. IF you do see a bat on the ground DO NOT GO NEAR IT!!!!! That is a clear sign the poor creature is infected. Bats DO keep the mosquito population down. If we did not have bats you would notice more mosquitos than there are now. Also, we would not have tequila if it were not for bats. They help in pollination of the agave plant. so, HOORAY FOR BATS!!!!!!!!!!!"Well behaved women rarely make history"
 Remster 30 #24 July 27, 2005 QuoteBats are my favorite animal.
