Congratulations to the SAR 2005 Photo Contest Winners!

First Place is awarded to the photo submitted by Mike Forsythe. The photo (Andy Anderson photographer) of Cara and Mike Forsythe was taken during a training jump during the development of an oxygen system for canines to parachute from high altitude. The jump set two world records, highest (30,100”) and fastest (205 mph) skydiving dog. To date, Cara has 67 jumps. Cara and Mike now train SAR and military special operation unites around the world how to jump with canines.

Cara is a six year old female Beauceron. She was a search and rescue canine for the FEMA Urban Search & Rescue Task Force 2, Miami, FL and Florida Special Response Team-A. She is also the only certified pararescue (skydiving) search and rescue canine in the nation. In December 2001, Cara was awarded the Heroic Service Award by the American Kennel Club at the AKC Classic in Orlando, FL, for her work at the WTC.

Congrats! The other people who submitted photos must have been bummed when they found out they were competing against a skydiving dog. Who can compete with that?

because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon

The funny part is that she has more jumps than a lot of the posters here. :D

LOL, she has more than me! :D But thats okay, that is one cool pooch! Congrats!! :)
BTW, I'm just curious what type of "search and rescue" she could do in the air. What exactly is she trained to do?

The S&R isn't in the air. The skydiving portion is a quick way to get the team into a remote or difficult location. Once the dog is on the ground it is released to begin its work.:)I would bet that skydiving is the ultimate car window for a dog!;)

She looks for people who go low on big ways and goes down and bites them. That will teach those people to learn to fly. Go low and you get bit!:D

Oh, I see! Thats so cool! Cara rocks!! B| (And Mike, too, for going with her. ;))

Ok, one more question -- so the high altitude jump she did was just for record setting purposes? Would she ever be called upon to do a jump like that for S&R?

No, it was part of the testing for a canine oxygen system.

It is possible.
Time and pressure will always show you who a person really is!
