Jav Webbing

Recommended Posts

Howdy,

I may be completely wrong... Frequently am.

I have had 3 Javs, one 1999 one, and two 02 models. The legstraps and whole harness are made from all-black (no yellow edge stitching) webbing that feels smooth.

A Wings that I jumped, and a newer Jav Ive seen had a different type of webbing. It was 'rougher' to the touch and had yellow edge stitching.

Just wondering what type of webbings were used, and why there has been a change between the two?

hi,
the all black webbing, which i suspect has a seperate line of tread running down the middle of it is type 8 webbing, the one with 2 yellow stripes along the edges is type 7.they have different breaking strains, type 7 is 6000 and type 8 4000lbs.so most manufactures upgraded to the stronger material.

And type 13 has black lines along the edge that you can't see on black webing. For a while Javelins had double thichness leg straps. Type 8 on top of something. I don't remember the other side. You shouldn't see type 8 single thickness harnesses other than chest straps.

It's all good. Don't worry.

I have a 93 Jav with a chafing strip on the legstrap. Is this what you mean by "double thickness"? If so, it's type 7 webbing like on the MLW with a type 8 strap sown on (I hope I got the numbers right). One of the local riggers told me that Sunpath put these straps on so that the legstraps won't slip in certain weather conditions. It works great on my Jav, never slips at all that I can tell and I like my legstraps tight. Not sure if it was an after-market alteration or not.

That is probably factory-original.

Start by remembering that most parachute hardware was originally designed for bulky cotton Type 13 webbing. While nylon webbing may be stronger (than cotton) it is not nearly as bulky, ergo more likely to slip through old-school hardware.

Before hip rings, it was common to continue both (front and rear) reserve risers down - at least to the hip joint. Continuing that logic, it was easy to continue the (Type 8) rear reserve riser all the way down to the bottom end of the leg strap to better fill-out the buckle and reduce slippage.

In later years (e.g after hip rings were introduced), Javelin has made leg straps with two layers of Type 8 webbing, also to prevent slippage.

I don't recall Sunpath useing single 8 on the chest strap. I think that was part of their bragging rights about being a "wrap around" harness.

My memory is that they used 7/8 MLW on there continues harness with the 7 going on to form the leg strap. later to avoid slipping they continued the 8 along to beef it up to prevent slipping.

When they went to multi rings they went to an all 8 MLW all the way from reserve risor to leg. They may still have 7 on the lower lat but i don't recall. It's too early for my brain to work.

In general most of the harnesses, like mirage, got lighter when they redsigned them with multi rings. The pulls are all straight. I think Vector is the only one that went to 7 as a loop all the way through both reserve risors. I think Wings was that way from the begining. It was all kind of designed at once as it came after the ring craze set in and didn't have to go through as many design evelutions.
