f1freak 0 #1 July 29, 2005 A pic from another thread set this off. I'm a late 70's / 80's kid, and I was so into PRO wrestling... the big deal was AWA back then. It was so cool..... Years after i stopped watching wrestling, I had one of my favorites buy a little tourist trap souvenir shop with his wife, and move in to a house that was less than 1 mile away..... does anyone know who he is? (see pic) or who were some of your old favorites....... damn i feel old.......HAVE FUN... ...JUST DONT DIE

waltappel 1 #12 July 29, 2005 My personal favorite wrestler of all time is Ravishing Rick Rude. He had a way of getting the audience so intensely pissed off that I can only hope to achieve a fraction of that in Speakers Corner. Walt
BillyVance 35 #13 July 29, 2005 QuoteLooks like George "The Animal" Steel. edited to add: Forgot to add: ...plus Bobby "the Brain" Heenan. Walt That was Classy Fred Blassie, not Heenan. Blassie was famous for his zingers, like "you pencil-necked geek!" Blassie was one heck of a show-man, even after his wrestling days were over and he did mostly managing. I watched a lot of wrestling myself back in the late 70's, although down here in the south, World Championship Wrestling and its predecessor (based in Atlanta) was the big deal. I remember a little about AWA, and once met wrestlers George "the animal" Steele, Brad Reignhans (sp?) and one other guy on a plane from Detroit to Memphis. I had a nice talk with them. George was a weird one though. No one was sitting in front of him so he pushed the seat back over to a horizontal position and used it as a leg rest. I don't think the flight attendant was too amused, but she didn't complain until it was time to get ready for landing. I once saw Arn Anderson running to the bathroom in a terminal at the Atlanta airport, and he was plenty big. Bigger than I thought. Oh yeah, I also met The Iron Shiek there recently. My, how time has ravaged his body. It was almost pitiful to see him getting pushed around in a wheelchair. But he broke into a toothy grin when our eyes locked. Yeah, pro wrestling's pretty much fake and choreographed, but you do have to be pretty strong to pick 300+ pound gorillas and body-slam them and do many other moves, and learn how to fall without getting hurt. Once in a while a wrestler do get hurt, usually a torn ACL or ligament or something. As for the blood-fests more prevalent today, they usually have some kind of object to make cuts to start the bleeding whenever a foreign object is used, like a steel chair shot to the head. However, if I were facing somebody like Batista (scary dude), I would not want to be the target of his repeated chair hits on my back! He's relentless, but I love the way he is in the ring, take no shit and no prisoners. About all we can watch on TV nowadays is WWE. Wrestling has gotten pretty trashy over the years, and now we have these WWE Diva (more like Bimbo) competitions, and I would rather see more wrestling action. Oh well, on the plus side, Animal, from the Road Warriors and Legion of Doom team, that was so dominant in the 80s and early 90's, has made a return to the ring in recent weeks. Remember his favorite move, I think it was the Atomic Elbow. He was one of my favorite wrestlers in the 70's and 80's. Had a long rivalry with Ric Flair. Damn, Ric is STILL wrestling! Not full-time though, but every now and then, he laces up his boots and puts on the grandest robes for a match where he proceeds to reprise his role as the Dirtiest Player in the Game. WHOOOO! Damn, he looks like he's almost 60! Hulk Hogan has come out of retirement, if maybe only briefly, since he's been challenged by The Heart Break Kid (Shawn Michaels) to a match to decide who's the all-time greatest show-stopper. Hogan's counter-challenge was this "whatcha gonna do brother, when Hulkamania destroys you?" Hogan even has a show on VH-1 called "Hogan Knows Best". If you've seen The Osbournes on MTV, it's almost the same, but with a LOT LESS "bleeps". Maybe not as funny, but more down to earth. Other wrestlers back in the old days that I remember: Sting The Four Horsemen (including Ric Flair) Sid Vicious (he was crazy!) Cowboy Bob Orton (his son Randy Orton is on WWE's Smackdown, and is already a former world champion, and youngest ever). The Rock-n-Roll Express (tag team) Road Warriors (Animal and Hawk) Jake "the snake" Roberts (with the python in his bag) Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka (who could forget that steel cage match where he leapt off the top of the 15 foot high cage for a frog splash on his opponent, only to have the opponent roll out at the last second? Snuka went to the hospital with broken ribs, IIRC) So many more I can't remember them all. Good times!
