ICE your cell phone

Recommended Posts

I just got this in an email... can any of the EMT/Paramedics tell us if it's true?

It could save your life!

Paramedics will turn to a victim's cell phone for clues to that person's identity. You can make their job much easier with a simple idea that they are trying to get everyone to adopt: ICE.

ICE stands for In Case of Emergency. If you add an entry in the contacts list in your cell phone under ICE, with the name and phone no. (both work and home) of the person that the emergency services should call on your behalf, you can save them a lot of time and have your loved ones contacted quickly. It only takes a few moments of your time to do.

Paramedics know what ICE means and they look for it immediately. ICE your cell phone NOW!

Please pass this along.

I have all my emergency contact info on the back of a business card that sits right behind my driver's license in my wallet. Seems there'd be a better chance of it being found/seen there then for them to figure out that it's in and how to use my cell phone (which most people can't figure out how to turn on). I'm also assuming it's more likely to survive a crash than my cell phone is -- I have it there mainly for those times I go out wandering the country on my bike.

I-ice
C-compression
E-elevate

Never used the other.

As far as emergency contact goes, my immediate concern is the patient and their medical history. Contacting family is low on the priority list. Unfortunately, the majority of the people I see that could benefit from having readily available info like that, are folks who lack personal responsibility.[:/]

I have worked in EMS for 25 yrs.. driving a desk for the past 18 yrs never heard of this.. the best thing to do is have a card in your wallet next to your driver license with contact #s.. police will pull your driver license out and can see you info on the card... cell phones go flying in a wreck and may not be found or usable after a bad one. PLEASE DON,T TALK AND DRIVE!!!! EVEN A HANDS FREE PHONE!!!!! Most phone calls and wait until you are not driving!! (sorry I'll get off my soap box now)

I totally agree! I used to talk on my cell phone, but for some time now especially after my accident last month I get REALLY nervous if I'm a passenger in a car where the driver is talking on a cell. It really freaks me out. If someone calls me while I'm driving, they get my voicemail. That's what it's for.

I dunno about the ICE thing, but I've got a small pocket attached to my motorcycle helmet that holds a tyvek card with all of my contact info, medical info, drug allergies, etc.. on it. B|

Do you have the label in big red letters that say "In case of accident, DO NOT REMOVE HELMET unless medically trained" ? I don't, but keep thinking about it. Had a guy on a bike die here last night w/no helemet. Drove right over the blood stain this morning [shudder]

It's actually a reflective sticker with black letters around the base of the helmet.

I'll never understand why people ride without helmets. I had a friend nearly get killed last year after a dirtbike wreck w/o one... :S

I ordered it from a catalog. It's a small pocket that has some adhesive on the back that sticks to the helmet.

I think you can get them here:

When I was at the Orlando tunnel last year I found a cell phone lying next to the sidewalk. It had the name "peaches" on it. I called the last number dialed - it was her boyfriend in Michigan, who had no idea who "peaches" was, and didn't know the phone number.

Then I called the next number dialed - it was her mom. She didn't know who peaches was either, and didn't know the number - my mom's the same, she doesn't know anyone's number, just programs the speed-dial. The funny thing was that "peaches" was her daughter and they were both there in Florida scouting out colleges, and her mom already knew her daughter lost her cell phone, but didn't make the connection.

Then I called the next number dialed - it was her dad who vaguely remembered that some of her friends nicknamed her peaches. He called her mom, who came to the hotel with her daughter to get the phone. I don't know what college her daughter ended up going to, but I hope she didn't take her mom's brains with her.

I lock my cell phone so that it has my name, email address and my alternate phone number displayed on it. Maybe I'll add emergency contact on there as well.
Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

I don't have any emergency contact numbers in my wallet.
If I die, just leave me on the side of the road and let the state take care of it....no need to cost family $$$ to bury my butt. Make some good use of my tax dollars rather than waste it on political pork.

My reality and yours are quite different.
I think we're all Bozos on this bus.

Yes it's true.

I read an article on theregister.co.uk that mentioned that they had started doing this in the UK...

Yes this is true. I do work with our local Sheriff's Department, and this is something we encourage people to do.
