Grr. I really want a Motorola Razr, but I haven't quite been able to bring myself to plunk down $200 for it.

Then, I saw a banner ad on Yahoo for a FREE Razr with a bluetooth headset!! Yay! Available with new service actiavtion. Boo!

Basically, because I already have an account, and even though I'd sign the 2-year contract, I'm not eligible without cancelling my current account and activating a new one.

Can you port phone numbers with the same provider? (i.e. cancel my current account, and "move" my number to a new account with the same company?)

you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk?

Have you had a chance to play with the phone yet? A couple of my friends picked them up right after they came out. They look cool and what not, but they aren't overly durable compared to normal cell phones. I don't know about porting the number though. Sorry.

Edited to add: Sorry I was typing the same time as AggieDave was.

Have you read reviews of that phone? They look cool, but all the reviews I've seen and people I've talked to HATE the phone.

Really? Well, duh Becca, no I hadn't read reviews.

Why do they hate it?

I'd go in there like you own the place and assertively ask that very question. Look for the geeky guy with pale skin cause he will go the extra mile for you;)!

Yeah, I tried that. The sales rep must not like commission - he didn't give two shits. >:(

So then I called customer service and became very excited when they said they had a dept. that could match the online offer. Woo hoo! Then the guy from that department explained to me like I was 2 why they couldn't make me happy and why it was for new accounts only, yadda yadda...

But if the phone sucks, then it's all a moo point anyway.

"A moo point?"
"Yeah . . . it's like a cow's opinion. It just . . . doesn't matter. It's moo".

:D

I'll take the misspelling of the correct word "moot" over the incorrect use of "mute" point anytime. Plus, "moo" is just plain funny

Well, here's a review from MSN's CNet editor. He gave it an 8, and most of the users who posted gave it higher than that. The one guy who didn't like it dropped it and broke it.

Is there a 'gold standard' for online tech reviews? Somewhere I can get the straight answer?

'moot' wouldn't have been right there anyway. :)
As for the phone - you can get it free from amazon.com too. If your current contract is up, you should be able to buy that 'new' and get it free. You might then have to 'transfer/cancel' your old account.

Do a search on Amazon.com and read the reviews there. Apparently, it seems to suffer from low volume (the reason I got rid of my Motorole MPx200) and is quite fragile.

But lots of people still seem to like it.

I just spent some time floating around the net rereading reviews. Editors tended to give it good reviews, but consumers tended to rate the phone lower, around 5 out of 10 or so.

Here's C-net's top cellphone list:

Why wouldn't "moot" have been right?

Yeah, why? The point of looking for a better deal would be, well, pointless if the phone is a piece of crap. How is that not moot?

From m-w.com: deprived of practical significance : made abstract or purely academic.

See? It was so right! :P

Well those bozos got some odd reviews. The T-mobile version seems to be getting pretty high reviews.. BUT that's T-Mobile we've had crap for phones and service so anything that looks cool and works is going to get a 10.

moot != pointless

It's just been bastardized enough that people take it as such. "made abstract or purely academic" is the important part of your definition :D

Sorry... I'll give Jessica's job up now....
