Album or Record?

Recommended Posts

A band releases a new set of songs, on cd (or my current fav, DVD-Audio) or MP3, or vinyl or whatever.

Would you call it their new album or their new record?

I'm trying to settle a dispute with the old guys at work :P:D

Album, a record is a physical thing. I wish we could still get records ie. vinyl. I love the cracks and pops from a record.

Funny how the word 'record' is becoming popular again because yeah, I associate it with big old vinyl disks.

I have to admit I became a CD convert many years ago, just for the convenience (and now everyone else is downloading mp3s I'm old-fashioned again, damn it!) But recently at the Virgin Megastore I noticed there were vinyl copies of just about all the new albums.

And I have to agree - there's nothing like the sound of the needle hitting the vinyl at the start of your favourite record. It's like the sound of turbine engines starting up. It's an anticipatory thrill... :)

The term "album" comes from the days of 78 RPM recordings. Each song was on one side of a vinyl (?) disc. A collection of these recordings was housed in sleeves that were bound on one edge. It looked very much like a photo album. Therefore a CD is as much an "album" as our 33.3333 RPM records were/are.

A Record is no more a physical thing than an Album is.
Album is a collection of "whatever" (music, photos etc...)
Record is recording of something, either in music, text, or visual format:|

BTW I use new CD:)

Although the term Album can be used to describe the physical attributes of recorded material, it is far more common to grant that distintion to a record. A record, in the music industry, is a physical object, while an album is the compilation which is on the record.
Technically a new CD is neither, but much closer to a record. The release of said work though, is the release of an Album.

Hope that made sense....

Album, of course.

But then again, I'm old too. :P

Yeah, I grew up when we called them albums and they were LPs. But album is still not a bad word, because an album is a collection, like a photo album, which an LP never was either (though they were just big enough for PHENOMENAL cover art, something the modern CD simply can't offer).

Hmmmm.... I also grew up when they were called albums and they were LP's (the 45's were known as 7-singles). I still have a full set of Beatles albums as well as a full set of Elvis albums on vinyl, both in mint condition. In each instance, the box is marked Collection, and each box contains several vinyl records, each of which (in some cases two) represents an album!
You would say, for example, "Who scratched that record" but "Where is my Sgt Pepper's album?".

Oi... and I complain about semantics!:P
