EricaH 0 #1 July 29, 2005 Soon I need to purchase a new bed. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with anything other than the typical box spring, as in the sleep number bed, or any of those space age foam mattress thingies even the bedding toppers that supposedly make a box spring feel great. the issue is that my s/o & I have completely different ideas of what's comfy at night - he likes the bed to be very firm as if sleeping on the floor. I like the bed very soft - I basically haven't had a good night's sleep in over a year. So, lets hear the good & the bad of any kind please. For example, the sleep number bed - isn't it like a big air mattress - where your back sinks in. And is it tough enough material to hold up under some, um, interesting events? There is no can't. Only lack of knowledge or fear. Only you can fix your fear. PMS #227 (just like the TV show)
bwilling 0 #2 July 29, 2005 Sleep number bed... I know people that have them and love them, and one of the features is perfect for you and your SO... independently adjustable firmness for each side of the bed! The only downside, the higher end models are really expensive! http://www.selectcomfort.com "If all you ever do is all you ever did, then all you'll ever get is all you ever got." Vallerina 2 #3 July 29, 2005 When I tried the sleep number bed in the store, it felt like a glorified air mattress (as you mentioned.) Actually, I think my Aerobed is more comfortable. The soft on the sleep number bed really isn't soft. I didn't like it, but give it a shot at a store! There's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning
AndyMan 7 #4 July 29, 2005 We haven't had a box spring for years. With the improved mattresses out there, box springs really are redundant. They simply don't serve any purpose anymore. A lot of the "box springs" out there don't even have springs anymore, they're really just boxes to give those who demand one something to take home. Usually they're included for free or low cost. The biggest problem in going without a box spring is that most of the beds sold - especially by the large department stores - require them for the mattress to be at a proper height. When I went bed shopping last, I shopped at Room And Board, a Michigan avenue store that can be pricey - bud I found their beds all very reasonably priced. They also offered a choice of mattresses - all without box springs - for also very reasonable prices. http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/. They offer a range of mattresses from an innexpensive store brand up to luxurious memory foam models. I picked the most inexpensive store brand, and have been very happy with it for 5 years. Recently craichead and I added a memory foam topper we picked up at Costco. The best part is that the beds are designed to work without box springs, so that the mattress is at a comfortable height and we have lots of storage space available underneath.__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. Buried 0 #6 July 29, 2005 my bro has a sleep number. They like it but I personally couldn't see myself ever getting one. just remember to negotiate a little, even if it's for the difference in sales tax price (say tax in chicago vs gurnee) The mattresses come from the same place so there is no reason why you should pay more at one store when you can drive 15-20 miles and pay 5% or more less at the same chain Where is my fizzy-lifting drink? moonglo 0 #8 July 29, 2005 I have a futon on a wooden platform (I Built!) and i love it. It's squishy/soft enough for comfort but solid enough that it doesn't aggravate my bad back!!
EricaH 0 #9 July 29, 2005 I like the idea that it's my turn to be comfy!! Alas, I think even though I bitch more regularly, I actually have a higher tollerance for bothersome matters. I've heard great things bout the memory foam, but I just don't get how they could work as a topper. The dip in my waiste is more than an inch - so how does an inch thick topper support my midsection? The beds made of the stuff are just way too expensive. Thanks for the Room & Board referral - there's one in Oak Brook too. I know what you mean Andy about the bottom portion of the bed being basically useless, I was wondering bout different types of mattresses vs. those w/ springs. So, guess I'll have to go try the sleep number - i do fear the air bed feel. I've slept on an aero bed for the full 10 days of WFFC - it took weeks for my back to recover & so I'm afraid nothing that sayis "air" in the bed support has my support off hand. There is no can't. mfrese 0 #11 July 29, 2005 My wife and I just switched to the Tempur-Pedic memory foam mattress from a futon, and that little fucker is heaven on plywood as far as I'm concerned. Have your s/o try it out, he may be surprised. I liked the futon for years because it was like sleeping on a padded brick, but the T-P feels firm but conforms to every part of your body, in every sleeping position. Besides, they have their guarantee program so you can actually try it out before you buy it, so it might be worth checking out.Doctor I ain't gonna die, Just write me an alibi! ---- Lemmy/Slash

The dip in my waiste is more than an inch - so how does an inch thick topper support my midsection? Hehe...when we got ours, I didn't think it would make that much of a difference, either. We have a 2" thick foam topper with a comforter-like cover for added cushion. It actually does relieve pressure points, feels soft and squishy, and you're still supported. When we have overnight guests, we take it off of our bed and put it on the sleeper sofa--it makes a HUGE difference there. In our trailer, we have a 3" thick foam topper on top of an okay spring mattress--definitely an improvement. You remember how comfy and squishy the mattress felt when you guys raided our trailer that night? _Pm__ "Scared of love, love and aeroplanes...falling out, I said takes no brains." -- Andy Partridge (XTC)

TheBachelor 5 #14 July 29, 2005 I looked at the "Sleep Number" beds, and found a competitor called "Comfortaire" (http://www.comfortaire.com/). They were cheaper than the better-known brand (they are sold by independent sellers on the web.) I've had mine for more than a year and really like it.There are battered women? Rookie120 0 #17 July 30, 2005 I have a Serta and love it but the other side isnt so impressed. My mom who has had back pains for years from lifting fat ass patients at work has spent over $6,000 in the last 5 years on matresses and has found one that doesnt hurt her back in the morning. It's from Denver Matress, I dont know exactly what model it is but I can find out in the morning. If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck! EricaH 0 #18 August 1, 2005 Wow - thank you all for the input! Guess it's all just based on personal opinion & comfort (no one size fits all). Though the generic version of the sleep # sounds very interesting. Bradley, I would be interested to know what your mom ended up with. There is no can't. Only lack of knowledge or fear. mnealtx 0 #19 August 10, 2005 Ok, the topper and pillow made it here on Monday... First impressions: It's a bit firmer than the Tempur-pedic beds you see in the mall. It's still a soft feel, though - sort of like laying on a firm mattress with a 'super pillow top'. You're cradled by the foam, but it's still nicely firm and you're well supported. I've slept very well both nights. There's not quite as much "give" as the Tempur-pedic beds you see in the malls. The foam will soften slightly over time, and of course hundreds of people have lain on those beds and softened them up. Overall (with only 2 nights sleeping on it) I'm very satisfied.Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. POPS 9708 , SCR 14706
