cocheese 0 #1 August 10, 2005 I've been meaning to pull my parents aside and give them the talk about what skydiving means to us and how important it is to us etc. They still don't get it and have never even seen me jump.Anyway, i was thinking of volunteering to write a note or poem for all of us to give to our loved ones who just don't understand the obsession we have and need.Or something we could give them that explains it all in a simple way.I haven't had time to do this. But i think it would be cool if some of you put your talants to work and came up with the ultimate note or poem. Thanks, we're all counting on you. jumpjunkie2004 0 #2 August 10, 2005 My mother is one of the few family members that actually seems to understand. She has even agreed to do a tandem for her 64th BD in February! I've tried to articulate why I skydive. I've been asked a number of times, by an assortment of people. Not long ago, I attended the USPA General Membership meeting and they asked that question, "What got you into skydiving?" I went for a tandem, and when I landed. I thought - that was a little petrifying. I have to do it again. I think you're either a skydiver or you are not. You just don't know it until you give it a try. I would have never guessed that I would love something (other than my children) this much. I spend entirely too much time thinking about my last jump and wondering when I'll get my next. I have jump lust... If I come up with something "poetic", I'll post.Jump, Land, Pack, Repeat...

RkyMtnHigh 0 #4 August 10, 2005 Dear Mom and Dad, I am going to do the best I can to help you understand my love for skydiving and why after the recent losses of my friends that I continue to jump. First and foremost, the friends I've lost wouldn't want me to stop jumping..if it happened to me, they know I would want them to continue because it's something that brings them joy. .....(now I'm stuck..help me finish this letter) _________________________________________

waltappel 1 #8 August 10, 2005 Dear Mom and Dad, You know that I love you both very much and I will be eternally grateful for the values you instilled in me. I could never have hoped for such great parents. I know that my skydiving worries you, so I'd like to put your mind at ease. Skydiving has come a long way since its beginnings. It's a much safer sport than it has ever been. I'm quite sure that I am far more likely to die from my heroin addiction than skydiving, so please don't worry when I jump. And trust me, my gay S&M lifestyle involves FAR more risk than does my skydiving. Oh, and did I mention my latest hobby--autoerotic asphyxiation? Now *that* gets kind of dicey at times! Anyway, please don't worry. I'll probably move on to some other sport after a while and will leave skydiving behind. Until then, I promise that I'll jump as safely as I possibly can. Love, ....... It's about who I am; who you taught me to be. When I ran into that burning house and saved those babies, I did so because of the values you taught me. I'll never forget those values. And when I fought those 6 hungry alligators to rescue that beautiful little puppy, I did it because I aspire to be that person you always believed I could be. I could never live with the knowledge that I did not do my very best to strive for the kind of courage and humanity that you have taught me. That is why I risked my life to keep that angry mob from burning that beautiful American flag. I skydive because of you, Mom and Dad, and I'll love you forever because of it. So now my question is "is it digital? or for real?" (Dave Chappelle Show) I like Dave Chappelle too. He's my kind of funny! I don't get the "is it digital? or for real" reference, but... I went away for real. I've been desperately trying to catch an injured raccoon for the past new nights. He got away tonight, but I'm hell-bent on getting him tomorrow. As far as you being an inspiring kind of gal, definitely for real! I won't waste the cyberbits running a poll, but I'm pretty sure everyone who reads your posts on dropzone.com would agree wholeheartedly. Walt

Elisha 1 #24 August 10, 2005 OK now.....back on topic My Aunt (well, one of many) came out to the DZ last Saturday and saw me jump. First actual relative to see me jump. There was dinner after the sunset load and the other DZ folk were very nice to her. She enjoyed the visit and I was happy how welcoming they were. I think that was the first time she saw ANYONE jump (or should I say land). Anyway, I'm sure it changed her perspective.
