kelel01 1 #1 August 11, 2005 Ok, so for about the 49th time since I graduated college 3 years ago, I am once again considering returning to that wonderful state of FT studenthood. Anyone left FT employment to go back to (or hell, go for the first time) school, in hopes of obtaining a new/better career path? In all likelihood, I won't actually do this, but I'm once again considering all my options. Any advice?
tcnelson 1 #2 August 11, 2005 i'm going right back for the grad degree but, it will be on a part-time basis along with FT work. i need the skydiving money."Don't talk to me like that assface...I don't work for you yet." - Fletch NBFT, Deseoso Rodriguez RB#1329
kelel01 1 #3 August 11, 2005 See, there's not really a school close enough to here to go to while working FT. Well, maybe, now that I think about it. I'll have to look into what UGA offers on their outer campuses. That would be ideal, actually.
tcnelson 1 #4 August 11, 2005 the kickass part of my situation is that my employer is going to pick up my tuition. "Don't talk to me like that assface...I don't work for you yet." - Fletch NBFT, Deseoso Rodriguez RB#1329
Nightingale 0 #5 August 11, 2005 I quit a full time job to go to full time law school. Don't regret it so far.
NWFlyer 2 #6 August 11, 2005 Yes, been there, done that, at about the same age and work experience as you had. Great decision for me. When I finished college, no way in hell did I think I'd ever want to go to graduate school. I was burned out and there wasn't anything academic that really "turned me on" enough to want to spend 2-10 more years of my life exploring it. After about a year or two of working, the idea of going back to school was more appealing. I was mature enough to imagine being focused and I had some professional goals (having found a career path of sorts by that point). I looked at both law school and business school (and joint degree programs) and figured out that I could meet my career objectives by going to business school, which seemed generally more interesting and fun that law school (not to mention a year shorter). At age 24, with three years of post-college work experience, I sucked it up, took the time/effort to do the application process "right" and was lucky enough to be admitted to one of my top choices... went there, went deep in debt to do it and have no regrets, even though I'm considering sending my career in a different direction now (8 years after finishing up). Going "back" to being a student is fun, I think, especially when you're still single. I was more mature and more balanced - if anything, I had *more* fun in business school than in college, but I also knew how to approach my education as a full-time job. Just like when I had a full-time job, I could go out partying, but I was still at school at 8 (if I had a class) or 9 (if I didn't) the next morning hitting the library or the computer lab. Going back full-time is also cool because you can drink in all the bars (not just the ones where your friends tend bar or you know they're lax on fake IDs), you can make fun of the undergrads (and marvel at how YOUNG some of them look), you can partake in all the cool collegiate activities (my grad school happens to have a basketball team that's won a game or two...) and still live a grown-up life in the process."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
kelel01 1 #7 August 11, 2005 Yeah, but I don't think my company will pay for me to get a Biology degree (seeing as how I work in insurance). And thanks for the response, Kris. Then never mind. The only problem with that is, I'd have to apply to go to school somewhere else. I don't have to apply to UGA, since I already have a degree from there.
