What to do with my little Angel tomorrow?

Recommended Posts

So my little Angel Sherpa (better known as knothead :P) was up until 1am playing with his Kong toy and tennis ball. Which wouldn't be so bad except he would toss it up in the air to catch it, miss and go running across the living room which in turn would wake me up. So tomorrow I'm going to do something to wear his ass out. My options are to go hiking on an off-leash trail, Swimming at the local dog beach, or Obedience class.

If we do obedience class it's from 10am to 11am and totally blows the day for hiking, we could still go swimming but by the end of obedience class I normally would rather strangle him than take him anywhere. Obedience class is the only time he acts up cause he would rather play with the other dogs than listen to me, so it's a very stressful hour. Of course once he is "proofed" at obedience class than he will be 100% reliable off leash. :S

He is great off leash on the trails and at the dog beach, also I can do informal obedience at both which is less stressful because it's part of the game.

So which one of the three should we do?

You can still work his ass at the beach or on a hike. And yes, your little angel is good off leash.

Depends on if you want to wear yourself out too!

LOL....either way I'll wear myself out, just one way I'll stay dry. :P

The dog beach is on a good sized reservoir so I get in the water with him.

Mary if you are in town and not busy tomorrow you are welcome to join us in which ever we do. :)

Remember, this is the weekend my buddies are coming out. You are welcome to call me and go to Estes Park with us on Sunday. We'll also be doing a very short hike, don't want my sea level friends to get too tired;)

Yeah, he can handle 6 or 7 pooches at one time, but you increase that to 20 and add some Alpha intact males and suddenly he thinks he needs to show off how fast he can run and that he is a tough guy even though he has no balls.

What is funny is he reacts much more when the owners Belgians are on the field than when they aren't. I joke that he has a complex cause he doesn't have any papers. :P

Bwahaha....ok thats a good one...:D

It sounds like only certain dogs set him off. My husky was, hell still is like that...can be a great dog, but at times you see the light go off...and I know im in trouble :D

You will not wear him out physically. As soon as the lactic acid level goes down, he'll be ready for more.

Physical exercise for your pooch (looks like a Terv?) is great though, but just makes him more likely to beat you down the next time. Keep it up - every day you spend hiking adds an hour to his life.

If you want to calm him down and wear him out make him exercise his mind. Obedience class is good. Learning to "Stay" is great. Scent discrimination practice makes him think and he'll have to remember the scent and catalog the others and eliminate them - a very fun exercise for him and mentally exhausting.

Take it from my partner (Duke 1994-2003), an obsessive compulsive retrieving junky - if they bring it back one more time than you want to throw it - you lose the game! Sherpa sounds like a winner.

Have a ball (or kong), it doesn't matter what you do as long as you do it together.

No worries there, we have have been in obedience school for two months now, graduated from one on one lessons 2 weeks ago, so now we go to group class twice a week Saturday morning and Tuesday evening. I've started him on agility, but he just turned one and we are still battling his loss of focus after 15 minutes. We also do 30 minutes of obedience a night at home, currently working on the sit and down at a distance, and find a place on his own. Place = jump on top of something that is off the ground and sit, very handy for hiking and small kids are passing you on the trail. Actually it's very cute cause the neighbor kids love coming over to play distraction petting him, playing with his ball, calling his name all to get him to get up from his sit or down.

Sherpa is great we picked this breed cause we wanted a dog able to go mountain biking with us and he definitely fits the bill, he is just to young yet for that kind of hard exercise so he will get in shape over the winter and next spring we will see if he is ready.

Mary,

Should I bring the big bottle of wine or the small one for the hike on Sunday?

I've got plans for a very large hamster-wheel for over-energetic dogs. You would be able to bait it with whatever you like (I hear one dog likes rabbits :P). Eventually, I'll hook up an electric generator and use it to help power a wind tunnel.
