Rebecca 0 #4 July 10, 2003 Grr. Growing up in the military and moving around all the time, I developed a deep-seated prejudice against ALL movers. In all the many times we moved, it never failed that something got screwed up due to sheer negligence, or downright evil. Bastards even stole one of my favorite Barbies. Last time I moved by myself these unsavory guys tried to renegotiate the price before they had lifted one box... it was kinda scary... Sorry, off-topic. Cora, the only thing I can say is do it yourself/with friends, or be VERY careful about who you get- watch them ALL the time, and have someone come over to help watch and keep you company. Good luck sweetie!! you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk?

AggieDave 6 #6 July 10, 2003 Take pictures of all your valuable stuff, write down serial numbers of it and full descriptions. You want the date/time stamp on the photos from your camera too. If I remember correctly, some insurance companies (independant of the movers) have special insurance you can get for moving. My thought is to rent a big ass U-haul, offer pizza and beer at the end of the day for everyone to help you get it loaded. You will have needed to already box and label everything at this point so all they have to do is help load the truck. Get folks at your new DZ to help you unload it. I'm sure if you ask here, you'll find ppl in your area to help you out. Not only that, but a nice cross country trip in a U-haul can actually be fun, since you don't drive as fast and you're more prone to stop along the way, you get to see more of the country that way.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." jumprunner 0 #7 July 10, 2003 QuoteI'm considering paying movers to move me to CA. Any suggestions for trustworthy, reliable, reasonably priced companies? If you do take the moving company to court, you can expect to pay about as much or more in legal fees as you would to get yourself out of the hostage freight situation, and that's before the almost guaranteed appeals that the moving company will file. Cora, Watch out for this shit, I heard a rumor one time about how these movers were taking advantage of a lady and refused to unload the truck if she didnt give them 1000 dollars cash right away, in addtion to what she had already been charged. There is one mom and pop company that I used just to move down the street, located in Phoenix. I was talking to them during the move and they were telling me they were moving people from Texas, California, ect. so they do operate out of state. Up front, they wanted $250 in cash which they told me over the phone, they first unloaded the truck, then I paid them, everything fine. Paid them extra because I wanted to. They were pretty cool, worked really hard at getting everything in and set up right, very fast, these guys work. Was so impressd with them I paid them extra. Name is Father and Son Moving & Storage, located in Phoenix. You might want to check them out. There is also another one I used one time but forgot the name & dont know if they operate out of state. Deuce 1 #9 July 10, 2003 http://www.metrovan.com/ The owner is Dennis Pauley. A very reputable, dependable company I do a LOT of business with. They are NorCal, but might be worth contacting. With drayage companies, you usually get what you pay for. Good ones make moves pretty painless, but it costs.
LouDiamond 1 #10 July 10, 2003 Well the packers just left my place and they will be back in the morning to ship it. I just checked the black list and the co. moving me wasn't on it. Didn't really expect it to be since the Military is paying for it and they don't make a habit of using less than legitimate movers. Besides, if anything is missing or damaged I can claim it and the Gov't will reimburse me(which is why I am letting them move my Harley as well). I did however take some of the things I wanted to insure wern't damaged or misplaced to my new place already. This is the first time I used the Gov't to move me and it was a bit weird having people pack all my stuff but it sure as hell went quicker and my nerves aren't even an issue. One more bathroom to clean and a oven and I'm done for the day."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING

Also, the many mover's insurance is pitiful, like $.60/lb instead of the value of the stuff. Stacy 0 #14 July 10, 2003 I had a nightmare moving to FL. I hired movers recommended by teh relocation guide GIVEN to me from the US postal service when i put my address forwarding info in. the rate was good, esp since it was extremely last minute. the guys showed up 14 hours late (at 5 AM, nonetheless). they were loud, disruptive, but what could I do? single chick moving 1400 miles away in two days. aye. got the van filled up, then gave me the "new" estimate. whcih was 3x the first one. they wanted 50% then in a money order. I had a MO for 1/2 the original estimate, and kindly told them that had they showed up at a normal hor when banks were open i could have gotten them the other $$. they were pretty speechless at that. The movers were late by 3 hours in FLorida and like other stories they refused to carry the stuf finto my apartment with out us paying them 10% or an under the table cash donation. again my mom and i couldn't get the stuff up ourselves adn i knew no one, so we were stuck. somehow my DVD player, and some other sentimental things got lost. funny also, that my stuff showed up in FL on a different truck bearing a different company logo than the one it had been loaded into in NJ. DON'T use transworld van lines. they've gone under i hear, i know they were BIG on the blacklist. __
ladyskydiver 0 #15 July 10, 2003 Good question. The biggest thing is my piano and my motorcycle. If I don't sell anything and bring it all with me, I've got a 760 sq. ft. apartment with the usual living room, bedroom and computer stuff (no big kitchen appliances). Not really that much - a small-medium sized U-Haul would fit the stuff and then I'd just trailer my car. I'm currently considering selling my living room and bedroom set just to make it easier to travel.Life is short! Break the rules! Forgive quickly! Kiss slowly! Love truly, Laugh uncontrollably. Michele 1 #18 July 11, 2003 If anyone has a concern about their moving items across country, or even locally, my company has a huge network called "Concierge Service" which will generally be able to help - as long as I can call you a client/potential client, the service is free to you. It's like a referral service, but backed by our head company, and vets all contractors referred for insurance, legitimacy, and will back the referred up should there be an issue. PM me if you're in need... Ciels- Michele ~Do Angels keep the dreams we seek While our hearts lie bleeding?~
