Newbie 0 #1 August 17, 2005 I'm trying to get a limo/shuttle service to pick up 20 wedding guests next month from Manhattan and shuttle them out to Long Island but i'm wondering if LI is still within NYC city limits? I think it probably is right? Does anyone have any good experience with any NYC limo/shuttle service? I know that's a long shot, but what they hey. Thanks if anyone can help. kimemerson 7 #2 August 17, 2005 (Ok, a short NYC area briefing: Around here, we refer to "the Island" and "the City" as though there were only one city or only one island. We know what we mean but if we ever say someting like "I'm going to the island" and someone says, "What island", we automatically know we're talking to a visitor or some alien form.) Technically Long Island is not part of NYC, except for Queens, the only one of the five boroughs which is on the Island. And only the five boroughs make up NYC proper. None of the rest of the Island is part of the city. So Queens would have to be considered part of any service which states it serves the City - which, though this means all of means the five boroughs, some foreigners refer to "the City" when they mean only Manhattan. The rest of Long Island consists of other counties, cities and towns far too numerous to be part of "the City". So it really depends on which part of Long Island you mean. Limited to the City may mean no farther east than Nassau County. Double check the limo service to see what they mean, and if their rates reflect going to the City or if that's extra. But these people seem to cover a lot. http://www.metrolimousineservice.com/main.htm

The venue is in Mineola, so i would assume this is out side of city limits right? It's just some of the Manhattan based shuttle/limo companies do minimum hourly charge thing, unless it's "outside NYC city limits" so that got me wondering. Thanks again "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
kenz 0 #4 August 17, 2005 being from long island, i can tell you for the most part so long as you are willing to pay out the ass they'll take you anywhere.... i would advise that you take the LIRR.. there is a stop in mineola on the port jefferson branch... here's a link that may help you out - it will be MUCH cheaper, and they have taxis waiting at everystop so you'll be able to get a ride from there http://mta.info/lirr/html/ttn/mineola.htm"life does throw curveballs sometimes but it doesn't mean we shouldn't still swing for the homerun" ~ me

Mostly_Harmless 0 #8 August 17, 2005 I will have to agree with kenz. Also being from the island, the LIRR is probably the best way to get from and too the city. Even though the tickets on the LIRR have gone up I bet it still might be cheaper then a limo._________________________________________ www.myspace.com/termvelocity

Nah, New Jersey was the sixth, but they weren't asshole-ish enough, so they got kicked out and ended up with their own state. "How can you tell if someone is from New York?" billvon 3,110 #10 August 17, 2005 >The venue is in Mineola, so i would assume this is out side of city limits right? Yes. It's about 30-40 min by car with no traffic from Manhattan, depending where you start. To someone who lives in NYC, "the city" is Manhattan. To someone from Suffolk County (way out on Long Island) the city is made up of five boroughs - Manhattan, the Bronx (on the connecticut side of things) Queens and Brooklyn (both on Long Island) and Staten Island. A Brooklynite considers it an insult if you tell him he's from Long Island, though. Mineola, BTW, is in Nassau County between NYC and Suffolk County. In terms of how much it should cost - ask him, he'll yell at you, and you'll eventually agree on a price. Mineola is definitely not a tiny hard-to-find town so there shouldn't be much issue over his not knowing how far it is.

Newbie 0 #13 August 18, 2005 Thanks Kenz, the only problem is i have maybe 15-20 friends coming over to the US, all in varying parts of Manhattan and i thought if i hired a shuttle it would mean i could just tell them all to be in one place at one time, once they were ready, and it would pick them up. It's going to cost a couple of hundred bucks by the looks of things, but to trust my friends who don't know New York to navigate their way out to some place in LI on a train would be tempting fate, so we are trying to make it as easy on them as possible. Many thanks for the help though, i didn't even know about the LIRR, not being a native New Yorker. "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
kenz 0 #14 August 18, 2005 understandable but in all honesty you guys can still all travel together... if everyone meets at penn station, say in front of the mcdonalds by the LIRR entrance downstairs, you can all go on the train together... take the port jefferson line and you'll all show up at mineola and save a bunch of cash (they say the stop name about 5 times before you're there and while you're there, plus if you're still unsure there are maps and you can just ask a conductor)... i just dont want to see you taken complete advantage of because it probably will happen... riding in a taxi is great if you're going like 2 blocks, otherwise theyre gonna take you every place you dont need to go and hike up the meter.. and even if you plan on a set rate they'll always find a reason to either charge more or ask for a ridiculous tip... if you need help navigating penn drop me a PM.. im sure anyone else on here that has traveled on the LIRR will tell you its really easy to find your way.. if you still decide to go the shuttle route i'll ask friends if they know of any decent shuttle companies... i hope that helps a little more... i hope everything turns out well for ya ;) good luck!! ~kenz"life does throw curveballs sometimes but it doesn't mean we shouldn't still swing for the homerun" ~ me
Newbie 0 #15 August 18, 2005 Thanks mate, this is all really helpful. Don't worry, i would never stop a bunch of yellow cabs and ask them to take us all the way to Mineola - the idea was going to be to pre book a shuttle, agree a price with someone in charge, and have it set in stone. The more i think about it though, the more i like the idea of catching the train. How far is it the other end, once we hop off at Mineloa? Like how much could we expect to pay for cabs? How long would the whole journey take, do you think? "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
SuperKat 0 #16 August 18, 2005 Mineola is in nassau county. Limo and livery companies charge from zip code to zip code. They will probably charge you an arm and a leg. What I would do first is give them the zip code pickup and the zip code drop off. If you don't know what they are, they can look it up for you by using the address. SuperKat 0 #18 August 18, 2005 Quote would never stop a bunch of yellow cabs and ask them to take us all the way to MineolaIt's a NYC law for cabbies to not refuse any fare. They are obligated to take you where ever you want to go. Don't feel bad about the distance. They'd rather keep working on one job rather than wait around or drive around for another fare. If anyone ever refuses to take you anywhere, you make sure to call (212) NYC-TAXI. Make a complaint and they will issue that cab a summons. What's the most you ever lost in a coin toss, Friendo? Newbie 0 #19 August 19, 2005 Ah ok that's intersting. Does that mean i could ask one to take me to LA and they would have to do that? Just curious. Also, i was more referring to the cost of hiring 10 cabs to take us to Mineola...i think it will be more cost effective to charter a 20 person bus. Anyone know how much a yellow cab would be (roughly) from midtown Manhattan to Mineola? I'm figuring $70 or more? bisqit999 0 #20 August 20, 2005 At least $70 per cab, probably more. Best just meet at Penn station and take the train right to Mineola. It's somewhere around $6 each way. I took a cab from Penn to Newark airport the other day and it was $60. It was early and there was no traffic. Mineola is a little more of a drive and depending on what time of day it is..you'll pay more in a cab for sitting in traffic. And beleive me, you're gonna hit traffic! I've lived here all my life so feel free to ask any questions.
