cleaning your keyboard in the dishwasher

Recommended Posts

yeah, wtf? :S:S

someone in my office just came in saying she washed her mac keyboard in the dishwasher! apparently she heard from a few different sources that if you need to clean your keyboard, you can wash it in the dishwasher, you just have to make sure you don't use soap and it dries completely before using it afterwards.

she hasn't plugged it in yet, and i'm being a bit too lazy to google it right now, but has anyone ever heard of this?!?!?!?!

i'm hoping it's just one of those urban legends that gets passed around to see who's dumb enough to put their keyboard in the dishwasher.

I think it's fried... but what do I know? I've spilled water by accident into my keyboard (pc), and it didn't work right after that. [:/]

Hmm, it should work but only if it truely dries out.

The reason electoronic equipment dies when it gets wet is because the liquid passes electrical current across parts of the circuit that shouldn't have current passed across them.

If you wash it then dry it then pass electricity across the circuit, as long as no liquid is still present everything SHOULD be ok.

That's actually normal. I've done it. I wouldn't do it with like a wireless keyboard or anything... but a normal 'standard' keyboard... yeah, go for it. I usually just run them under water and use a brush though.

lew told me at wffc last year that i could fix my digital camera that i dropped in a beer by soaking and swishing it in distilled water for a few days then drying it out for a few more days. it was broken to the point of not even turning on before i tried this.
she was right... it worked!
she had done the same thing with a friends laptop that had wine spilled on it!

The important parts there are "distilled water" and "drying it out for a few days"!

Distilled water because tap water has sediments, minerals and all in it that could create arc paths between components.

Drying out for a few days so that you're *SURE* it's bone dry.....

But there's still no guarantee... caveat emptor!!

Not only do dishwashers clean plates and dishes but keyboards too.

Did you know that you can cook Salmon in the dishwasher? If you have a hard time getting your salmon cookied just right try this.

Place the fish on two large sheets of aluminum foil. Squeeze on some lemon juice and place the pats of butter on the salmon fillets. Seal the fillets well in the foil, and place the foil packet in the top wire basket of your electric dishwasher. DO NOT ADD SOAP OR DETERGENT. Close the dishwasher door, set the dishwasher on the hottest wash cycle, complete with drying cycle, and let it run through a full cycle. When the cycle is complete the fish will be cooked just right.

does this thing come with a remote control

I have not seen one with a remote control. Although I installed the clapper on mine so when I want to wash the dishes I just clap my hands. Although I have to wash dishes in the dark because when I clap to turn on the dishwasher the lights go out.[:/]

I know someone that left his cell phone in his pants and put them in a washing machine. I guess he realized when he was moving his clothes to the dryer. Pulled it out, let it dry, and it worked fine.

I got thrown in a pool yesterday with my cell phone in my pocket (thank god there was no whipped cream on the DZ or I woulda been pied instead). Phone seems to be working fine after drying off in the sun for a few hours.

Yeah, me too, but prior (a few months prior) I spilled smoothie and it and it worked fine (although still some sticky keys) once it dried. :S

I wash my keyboard in the dishwasher, however I unscrew the back side and take the electronics out.

Then I just put it back together afterwords. Works fine and is pretty easy to do. I also pop all the keys off and hand wash them.
