I wonder who will get the first base jump on this one?

(AP) Great views — and plenty of goosebumps for those afraid of heights.

An American Indian tribe with land along the Grand Canyon is planning to build a glass-bottomed walkway that will jut out 70 feet from the canyon's edge.

The horseshoe-shaped skywalk, expected to open in January, is part of the Hualapai Tribe's $40 million effort to turn 1,000 acres of reservation land into a tourist destination that will also feature an Indian village and Western-themed town.

The tribe's reservation is some 200 miles by road to the west of the section of the Grand Canyon National Park that most tourists visit.

The walkway, with a glass bottom and sides, will be supported by steel beams and will accommodate 120 people, though it is designed to hold 72 million pounds, said Sheri Yellowhawk, chief executive officer of the Grand Canyon Resort Corp., the tribal-owned company that is overseeing the project.

"You're basically looking 4,000 feet down. It's a whole new way to experience the Grand Canyon," Yellowhawk said.

Admission will be $25.

The project is still seeking an insurer, said architect David Jin, who said he came up with the skywalk idea while visiting the canyon in 1996.

Now you've probably red-flagged this one. [:/] I'm not a BASE jumper, but I know BASE jumpers do their best to keep their potential never-jumped-before jump sites secret...

Just FYI...

Not if it's a bandit jump for sure! :D:D:D

Basically, jumping into a 4000 foot deep hole with no escape route is folly... but you're right, I wouldn't want to hike out of there either.

Knowing the Hualapai tribe and their business practices, I would not be surprised to see them make BASE jumping Legal off their platform....for a price. They own all of the land on that side of the river, so there would be no NPS legal restrictions, provided you didnt somehow cross the river. If I were a BASE jumper I might be contacting the Hualapai about this one.

The Hualapai run the most popular takeout road for raft trips down the Grand Canyon. They charge an unbelieveably high price (like $100/person!!) for driving the road (and it's not a good road) out of the canyon. It is still the most popular takeout however, as the other takeout is several days later after rowing across Lake Mead.

Well we can't all aspire to eat bon-bon's and and watch soaps. ;):D:D It is beautiful at the bottom, and would be so much better if I could just float down. the escape route would be tuff though. maybe you could put a raft at the bottom and just float away.
