billvon 3,131 #1 August 28, 2005 We're sitting here in Vegas in a place called the Twelve Volt Bar. It's pretty cool. It's on an outdoor balcony overlooking the strip, and although it's 106F out, the evap coolers here work really well. It feels like 80F. I have some kind of blue drink, and Amy has a Pina Colada of some sort. Amy's taking off a final weekend before last-minute training and Nationals. I have to remember to get gas on the way out, because due to some poor planning the fuel mix in the car is like 70% alcohol, and I wanted to keep it under 50%. On the plus side E85 is about 60 cents a gallon cheaper than gasoline.

JohnMitchell 16 #14 August 29, 2005 QuoteHey I've been looking for some good evap coolers, you don't happen to recall the brand do you? If you're down in Dixie, I don't think evaporative coolers will work too well. They need low humidity to be effective. The manufacturers could tell you how low of a relative humidity you need. dixieskydiver 0 #15 August 29, 2005 I am indeed in Dixie and that does make sense. The humidity here at the beach is ridiculous. Dixie HISPA #56 Facil Rodriguez "Scientific research has shown that 60% of the time, it works every time."
billvon 3,131 #16 August 29, 2005 >you don't happen to recall the brand do you? No, and these were nothing like normal swamp coolers. They had very high pressure water jets being blown out of a pressurized manifold. It would have made everything soaking wet if the humidity level in the air hadn't been 0%. billvon 3,131 #18 August 29, 2005 >Why? Why 50%? Because the car's really only rated for 10%. People have tested the Prius up to 85% ethanol and it works fine, but I didn't want to push it.
diablopilot 2 #19 August 29, 2005 Cool. What bad effects can come of too high an alcohol mixture? I know in older conversions from gas to alcohol the biggest change that needed to be made was jet size in the carb. Fuel injection combined with a sensor to determine the fuel composition fixes that problem.---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. billvon 3,131 #20 August 29, 2005 >What bad effects can come of too high an alcohol mixture? Fuel hoses not rated for ethanol can degrade. Carbureted cars can't use it since the required mixture is different. Fuel injected cars with oxygen sensors, since they are closed loop, can adjust the mixture on the fly, and are usually OK with it. Generally ethanol gives you a little more power and a little less MPG. All modern cars can use E10 (10% ethanol) most can use E50, and some can use E85. Cars designed from the get-go to use E85 are called "flex fuel vehicles" (FFV's.)
