Rookie120 0 #176 August 30, 2005 I havent heard of any report of deaths in Baton Rouge as of yet. To the east of here I bet it will be a different story. I'm gonna try to get in touch with Gold Coast and Skydive N'awlins again tommorow and see if there is anything I can do to help out. We had to go to work tonight and get things set up for tommorow. Took us about 3 hours and we went home. We were very lucky here.If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!

cbain 0 #180 August 30, 2005 Everyone, Thanks so much for the concern. We left at the last second on Sunday before everything was shut down. Family in Alabama and Tennessee are helping us out for now. We got us, our rigs, a weeks worth of clothes and our cats. That's pretty much it. From the looks of it we probably won't have anything else for a long time. Our neighbors stayed and a whole bunch of other people we know. Pray for them. We'll be ok. Thanks again and I'll try to keep you posted as we learn what's left. BSBD, Christina & Al

Michele 1 #182 August 30, 2005 Christina, I am relieved to hear it. It doesn't matter about the material stuff; you can replace it over time...what matters is that you, Al, the cats and the rigs are safe. You have what's important with you; that's pretty much all you need. I recommend cocktails on an as needed basis, funny movies, good friends/family and a firm decision to avoid tv/internet/radio news for at least half of each waking day. Hang in there. skymama 37 #186 August 30, 2005 Don't be overly concerned that you can't reach them and assume the worst. My cell and land line services went out during the hurricanes last year. My phone would beep that I had a new message but I couldn't retrieve it. It was so frustrating! Hopefully they are just a little wet, but fine. gravitational 0 #189 August 30, 2005 should there be a clause in life ins. policies that read: if you're in the path of something bad and you're told to get out. You stay, you're not getting any benefits? This is tragic, but people continuiously think 'they'll be fine' if they stay put. If you don't have the means to evacuate, go to a shelter a little closer. Damn people, learn from others mistakes as hurricanes will continue happen.------ Michael
ChasingBlueSky 0 #190 August 30, 2005 I've heard/seen this attitude about hurricanes from many of our Florida jumpers over the last few years. Go back to last year and look at the threads and how many choose to ride out the storm. The ironic part is that some of these folk are the same that claim complacency kills in skydiving, or are canopy nazis. They are predicting 11 more storms this season, 7-9 will be major, and 3-5 could wash ashore. Yup, a record season. Let's see what they say over the next few months._________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again..... Anybody remember Hurricane Charley and what it did to the Lake Wales DZ last year? The U.S. Canopy Formation (crw) Team had been training there, including that very day the hurricane made landfall. When the weather took a turn for the worse, they all rode it out in the armory building next door, which barely withstood category 2 or 3 winds. Man, what a ride! Of course, I would be getting the fuck out of the way ahead of time though, waaay out of the way. Charley looked like it was going to hit Tampa, and a lot of people evacuated to Orlando, but then Charley made a jig to the east and came right through Orlando... d'oh!"Mediocre people don't like high achievers, and high achievers don't like mediocre people." - SIX TIME National Champion coach Nick Saban

There's the oft mentioned story about all the people at an apartment complex that died during a "hurricane party" when Camille washed ashore. I'm not sure that a lot of these people are just stupid any more than people who hook in are stupid. There are more likely ignorant and cocky. You can try to educate people to let them know the risks, but to many it simply defies comprehension. Add to that short memories. The only good part is that the community, press and government did all they could to let people know that Katrina is no joke. Those who chose to ignore the warnings or who chose to experience it firsthand can only blame themselves. Of course, if I find out about kids dying because the parents didn't get them outta there, it rises to the level of evil. My wife is hotter than your wife. Where I live, the probably of extreme flooding like LA and MS saw is very low because I'm so far inland. Also, FL has the toughest hurricane building codes in the nation thanks to Hurricane Andrew. If you ride it out in a house built since the new codes were enacted, your chances of survival are much higher than in those other states. My house is only 2 years old, there aren't any large trees nearby and I don't live in a flood zone. Once I board up my windows and doors, it can sustain a lot. All 3 hurricanes passed over my house last year. I lost electricity and a few shingles, but that was it.She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
ChasingBlueSky 0 #195 August 30, 2005 How many people in Florida do you know that are complacent about these storms? Are you willing to bet someone's life on the hurricane roof clips? Also, I've yet to meet a homeowner in Florida that has pre-made storm shutters that could be fastened to the house when these storms come to town._________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... skymama 37 #196 August 30, 2005 Oh, there are a lot of people who ride out the storms in older homes and trailers who should go to shelters. I'm just saying that not everyone falls into those categories. I don't have pre-made shutters, but I DO have a stack of plywood labeled for each window and door that my brothers and father can install within an hour. It's not like we don't get any warning when a hurricane is coming. If you drive along the coast now, you'll see that most of the condominiums have the shutters on them. I work for a building company and am the one who submits the paper work required to pull permits. You'd be amazed and the stack of engineering documents that we have to have for the homes we build. It takes a couple of months to pull all of it together. The houses in FL now are very different than the homes that just got hit.She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
marcandalysse 0 #197 August 30, 2005 Alysse, who is an architect here in Florida, says that no house built to FL hurricane regs will withstand over 140mph winds. Storm shutters mean little when, as posted last year on a thread, a tree trunk flies through a roof or wall. As for evacuating, last year the hurricane that hit Lake Wales and orlando looked like it was aimed at sarasota. Friends called from Orlando offering a place to stay. Sarasota's island residents evacuated to Arcadia, a half hour to the east. The hurricane bypassed sarasota, hit Port Charlotte to the south, entered inland, took the roof off the shelter in Arcadia, and knocked out Orlando's power etc. We barely felt the storm passing us. But yeah, cat 4 or 5.....we'd get the hell out of the entire southeast if possible. marc
RkyMtnHigh 0 #198 August 30, 2005 Finally made contact with my brother and he's so traumatized right now. We've lost several people that we've sailed with at regattas, since we were 8 yrs old, from Pass Christian and Bay Waveland. He said Bish and Matt found out that their parents lost their roof and the house was flooding. They went to save their parents, found them in life jackets. Bish got a Sunfish (small boat) for the family to hang onto, somehow they became separated and no one has found any of them I could hear my brother's voice quiver as he said "sis, it's gone, it's all gone". Wish I could be there to comfort him. From what I understand the State Patrol has all of I-10 closed to incoming traffic for MS and LA. _________________________________________
