Money made on disaster relief

Recommended Posts

I've got a good friend from high school (the only person from high school I actually keep in contact with, actually) who moved out Alabama a few years ago. He works in disaster cleanup, cleaning up after fires, flood damage, etc. I called his house a couple of days ago and spoke to his wife, who said that he was down at the coast, and will probably be there for a couple of months straight.

Joe's gonna miss his son's third birthday. He missed the second birthday last year cleaning up after the hurricanes. As much as Joe would want to stay home for the birthday, the money is just too good.

Yes, there are people who profit off of disasters like this. Amanda told me she felt like a ghoul at times knowing that these disasters are actually good for her family finances.

It led me to wonder about whether she is right to feel so bad about feeling so glad. There are numerous circumstances that this works with. Doctors would be out of business if everybody stayed healthy all the time. Therapists make good money off of people's problems.

I'll defer my commentary on lawyers. :)

I don't think that she should feel bad about it. Am I wrong, or should she and Joe be considered despicable for thinking that?

My wife is hotter than your wife.

Well, not everyone is able to freely donate time. Getting compensated for work (and its very hard work) is nothing to be ashamed of.

This brings up a good point though. After what I saw as wasteful spending on the part of the red cross after the club fire in RI a few years ago - I no longer donate to them but to other organizations that are local to the areas affected.

Hell-No she shouldn't feel bad!!! With her man gone, I charge you with the responsibility of convincing her of this... being the lawyer, you should have no difficulty :P

Seriously, this friend of yours does a noble noble job. Sure I understand the discomfort of uncontrollably associating disasters with $$$ for the fam but hey, it's what he does and his hard work is paid for.

Firefighters get good pay too! That doesn't mean they sit around hoping for fires. I understand that they get paid either way whereas your friend may not, but if you're going to work for money, and we all do, he should be commended for his choice of labor.

... give him props for me, and {{vibes}} to his wife, who must miss him.

Nick

No guilt.

Back when I was still playing fireman I met several guys who did the contract cleaning/refurb work on damaged homes. They provided a professional service and it was their job. Being professional, they were more cost effective and better equiped than volunteers. She should be proud that her husband provides such a needed service.
I am not the man. But the man knows my name...and he's worried

Joe may be making a living off disasters, but keep in mind, he isnt the one that caused them. They happen, and when they do, he makes his living off of it.

Now, if he had something to do with causing one, then Id say he is greedy and selfish. Otherwise Id just say he makes a living out of unfortunate circumstances that are going to happen anyway. Even if Joe is the kind of person that cant wait for the next disaster...Id say thats great, because when one happens help will be on the way. Thats the way Id want it.
