Because inline image tags were disabled (a loooong time ago) to save bandwidth. No reason to force EVERYONE to download an image just for reading a thread....

My bad, I misread it. One thing that bugs me is that you cannot post LINKED images, not ones uploaded to the site. I have a hojillion funny pics on my site, but having to either upload them, or make them a link is a pain, it'd be easier to just post them IN the thread.

That doesn't seem correct to me. The only thing that should be coming from the server is a "hey dickhead! There's data at http://yourmomshouse.com/nakedboobies.jpg! GET IT!", it doesn't send the whole image.

No, the image data still comes from my server, not from this one. The browser pulls the image directly from my server. There is no processing on the forum server other than a small log entry, UNLESS the forum server is caching the image.
EDIT: and if that image is being cached on the forum, someone needs to be slapped until they're not on the left side of the bell curve.
