Guest #27 September 1, 2005 QuoteQuotedoesn't quit hit home until you hear things like "Fats Domino" is missing so pictures of people on their roofs waiting for death doesnt hit close to home... Pictures of children sitting on their parents shoulders while wading through flooded waters doesnt humanize this? I call bullshit Through the media (usually TV) Americans perceive that they have relationships with celebrities. I don't know a single person, in person, directly affected by the storm. But since I "know" Fats Domino I would also perceive his loss if he is gone, more so than anonymous people, even children, whom I've never met. Its got nothing to do if hes a singer or whatever, it's the perceived loss that gets the TV time. What if Courtney Cox was missing or say all of the Friends when shooting a reunion special in NO? Would you care as little about them also? And WTF does being 70 years old have to do with it now? You want to just kill off the old fuckers? Why do you think in every TV movie-of-the-week ever made it starts with creating sympathy for the soon-to-be victim, whether an earthquake or spousal abuse? They need a relationship between you and the character so that you give a fk what happens for the next 1.5 hours. Same with the TV news, they need to show something that people care about. We care about people we know (or think we know) much more than anonymous people in a disastrous personal situation on a roof someplace. I mean, really, why does Oprah have a career? Its all different sides of the same rock. You can have it good, fast, or cheap: pick two.

Cut a hole (keep the plug) in a large watermelon, pour in a bottle of vodka, put the plug back in, then turn it a few times and eat it in an hour? Sounds yummy to me. flyangel2 2 #37 September 1, 2005 Not to mess up your hijacking here, but QuoteThe pictures and the news articles of what I mentioned before ARE one and the same. I am sick of people putting more value on one persons life because they can sing, or dance or act. Its people in our country, and people like you and Jen who seem to think this is a good idea, even Jen herself implied that he was more important because of his "status" I don't think Jen implied anything when she was trying to educate you as to who Fats Domino was. If that is how you perceived it, then so be it. Now back to your hijackingMay your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. Frenchy68 0 #40 September 1, 2005 Millions of people have died of Aids. Magic Johnson and Arthur Ashe helped putting a face on HIV & Aids. Nancy Reagan and many other people may have a different stance on Stem Cell research if it wasn't for her late husband's disease. Sometimes, having someone you "know" go through an ordeal helps one understand the broadness of the problem. There's plenty of coverage of the tragedy in NO without needing extra exposure. However, having a "figure" being affected by it does illustrate the fact that Mother Nature does not discriminate when it whoops some ass. It may not help, but it never hurts. Now go to your backyard and burn a flag or something.
