And Fly Fast to Avoid Small Arms Fire . . .

Recommended Posts

No way . . .

History has shown that military jumpers never stay current enough. It's the reason the Soviet Union subsidized civilian skydiving all through the late 50s, 60s and early 70s. They knew these civilian jumpers could be quickly drafted into military service, and would need minimal supervision.

"Military Paratroopers," in most cases, and who don’t participate in the sport side of parachuting, can make 50 jumps, and call it a 20 year career . . .

Why would you need "jumpers?" :S I have to agree with the SEALs when they say "If you have to jump in find another way." Of course...........technology is RAPIDLY changing that but it still holds true. Ummm...........airdrops would be a lot more helpful. If you want people in there you can go by boat I am sure. ;)

Actually IF they stayed current they would have to make a minimum of 80+. Assuming every jump they made for currency was a night, combat equipment, mass tac from a "High Performance Air Force Aircraft." To be S/L current you have to jump once every 90 days. ;)

I mean jumpmaster skills for the bundles, but I think you knew that . . .

Doing it from a jet at 800Ft is A BIT differen't than an Otter at 14K. Yes..........aircrews also have training blocks to fill. They must drop personnel, bundles, short field landings, etc. Used to have LAPES but they did away with that. They aren't perfect but I'd bet on a C-130 crew over some beer drinking skydivers most days of the week. :D

Who could drop it right were it's needed better than us . . . ?

I hope you're talking about spotting skills here! Would you really want to get your rig into that nasty nasty water?

On the other hand, the video'd be cool ... okay, how about I go but use YOUR rig? That's the ticket. ;)

You can have it good, fast, or cheap: pick two.

LAPES was bad-ass!! I remember watching them practice at Clark AB over in the Philippines... they quit letting people watch after they lost the drag chute on a full water buffalo and it almost hit a truck full of ossifer-types that were rubbernecking... ;)

Can someone tell me a reason why the U.S. has not provided the area with food and water drops yet? I just don't get it. [:/]

They've been having problems with people taking potshots at the helicopters, and others rushing to the approaching copters and preventing them from landing right on top of them, so they just hover 10 feet off the ground and drop the supplies. National Guard troops are still pouring in to set up security to make things a bit safer, but that's going to be hard to do. It's an unbelievable mess that I'm glad not to be in the middle of... [:/]

This is just a guess as I don't know what the ultimate plans for the DC-9 are, but couldn't it be used to offer zero-g rides? There's a company in Florida doing it and these flights are now considered the bottom tier of the "space tourism" industry. The others are the Russian Mig ride you can take for about $25,000 to the edge of space, the sub-orbital flights that soon will be available, and the 20 million dollar orbital flights that while limited, are available now.

I don't know if there's something about the DC-9 that would prevent it from flying parabolic arcs, but if not, there's no doubt jumpers, and non-jumpers too, would be lined up around the block.
