skycat 0 #129 January 12, 2005 QuoteDidn't stand up any landings (yet),but got a great flare on the last one when I realized that I couldn't actually pull them down all the way and doubled up on the toggles. Talk to your instructors on how to do practice flares up high, they can really help you get a feel of what you are doing and what the canopy is doing on landing in a "stress free" enviornment.Fly it like you stole it! SkydiveNFlorida 0 #130 January 13, 2005 Awesome, Jen! How are you doing on A license requirements? Did you tell them you need to complete them by the end of the week?! Too bad you can't take a trip up to Deland to take Scott Miller's beginner's course. I know you'd feel WAY more confident after that! Keep at it! :) -A
skymama 37 #131 January 13, 2005 QuoteThe winds picked up pretty good in the afternoon and lots of people overshot the landing area and I was scared to land out again Think of it this way...so many people fear landing out even with hundreds of jumps because they've never done it before. You already have that under your belt and lived to tell about it. You're ahead of the game! I still say it would be great if someone could video your landing tomorrow and go over your flare with you. Sometimes just doing that can fix people's landing problems. She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon

Actually - thats how I discovered I wasn't flaring completely. I pulled them down as much as I was physically able but even though I thought I had stopped moving my instructor came back to me over the radio and told me that I was still moving - so I wrapped the toggles around my hands and got some more leverage and was able to flare more completely. Its not ideal, but it will work while I'm on this rental rig. QuoteAwesome, Jen! How are you doing on A license requirements? Did you tell them you need to complete them by the end of the week?! Hey Angela! The only things I have left to get signed off on under canopy skills (got all my exit ad freefall ones signed off on) is 'Demonstrate a stand-up landing' and 'front riser dives and turns above 1,000 ft.' - I doubt I'll be able to do the front riser requiremenst and it thankfully says it can be waived if insufficient strength. I don't have any of the equipment stuff signed off as I'll be doing my packing class on Friday and will get it signed off then. I have to work some more on spotting too - just started that today so I should be able to get that signed off before I leave. I was having lots of fun today - despite sliding in on my very hurt behind Thanks for the good vibes all! JenArianna Frances

SkydiveNFlorida 0 #134 January 13, 2005 Yeah, it's hard when you can't flare completely. You should be able to stall in brakes, if you can't the brake lines are too long. Taking wraps like you've done may be the best move in this case (rental gear). What are you flying? I was barely able to pull the front risers on student gear as I recall, we're talking mere inches here. They generally don't worry about it and sign off. Has anyone suggested to you what might be keeping you from standing up? Are you flaring unevenly, or not enough? Too high, too low? Be sure to ask for people to critique you before you go up to jump. If a few people are watching you might get some good input. :) good luck, and don't discount the canopy course if you continue to have trouble (or, even if you don't!) It really is a good course, I went though Scott's course when I had about 25 jumps. I had been standing up my landings, but after a crosswinder that I slid in on my belly I had gotten a little apprehensive when it came time to land and so I screwed up several landings following that event. Then, I took the course, and video revealed I was flaring but letting up a little soon (not finishing!) Once that got fixed, my slide-ins stopped:) And, even though I had a runway landing the next day despite the patterns I was supposed to have learned.... I stood it up! See you Saturday I hope! Lets keep our fingers crossed for good weather! You can hope for wind, and i'll hope for no wind. -A
Nightingale 0 #135 January 13, 2005 I was jumping a 260 when I tried to do front riser turns. I did a full one handed pull-up while gripping the riser, and the canopy barely moved!
mailin 0 #136 January 13, 2005 Tell me about it! I'm lifting myself up in the harness and they don't budge. They told me "If you're hands aren't bleeding your not doing it right".... um....ok I guess I won't be able to do that then I'm on a sabre 210 and today one of the tandems made it down before me! Angela, I'm hoping to move my flight on Saturday to later in the afternoon - otherwise I won't be there at all on Saturday If my canopy stuff doesn't improve I may be back down here at Spring break for that canopy course! Wouldn't be such a bad thing of course! JenArianna Frances
SkydiveNFlorida 0 #137 January 13, 2005 Sorry if I miss ya on Saturday. Like you said, though, it may be bad weather in which case no one will be jumping. :( Funny, showers are forecasted but wind says 9mph, that is pretty low for showers. Maybe they will be localized showers:) Hope to see you back even when your skills do improve! Glad you're having fun in Sebastian. I guess my rep as the best AFF student is out the window since you came along Tandems are probably loading more than you:D -A
mailin 0 #138 January 14, 2005 Ok, todays update: Winded out No one was jumping today... So a couple of the girls and I went shopping and now we're heading to Pleasure Island for a bit of fun Angela, looks like I'll get to see you on Saturday, as I've got to change my flight to late Sunday now.... not that I'm complaining one bit JenArianna Frances
SkydiveNFlorida 0 #139 January 14, 2005 Pleasure Island, huh? Is that the Disney place in Orlando? Or, maybe that's Treasure Island. ? Sorry you were winded out. We'll see what the forecast for tomorrow says. It looks like Saturday may have some jump spots, but likely not a full day of jumping or any good swoops due to wind. But, if my man is up for it and it looks like a few jumps can be made then we'll make the trip. If it is completely unjumpable (ie, 25-30mph wind, thunderstorms, whatnot) then it would be hard to make the 2hr drive. I would like to meet you, tho. I'll let you know tomorrow when we see the forecast. :) Have you actually found things to do in Sebastian? I commend you for that! -A

mailin 0 #143 February 4, 2005 awwww... I feel so special Thanks for thinkin' of me Yep, 4 jumps from finishing my A jumps and the weather decided to suck for about 5 days So I'm heading back down to Sebastian March 7th to finish up... and enjoy some FL sun! But to anyone wanting to know how long it takes tailbones to heal... just got home from a 'butt-blasters' aerobics class (first one since before I left for FL) and couldn't make it past the first couple of minutes. I hardly notice it anymore but walking up stairs and doing that particular class is still painful. I had better get better landings next time I jump JenArianna Frances
