Helmet certifications

Recommended Posts

Is there any standard around actual helmet protection that's either in place or on the cards for skydiving helmets?

As far as I'm aware, only Pro-tec has a CE certified helmet. All the rest aren't certified to any standard.

For the record, I'm a motorcyclist and I'm into having good protective gear. I bought a fairwind helmet with the comfort liner.

short answer is no. For a more detailed explanation a search on helmet certification will bring up several threads.

Hi daniel,

The last that I knew (many years ago) ANSI had a standard for helmets. It was the successor to the Snell Institute's standards. I do not remember the standard number; but Z-90 seems to ring a bell.

ANSI = American National Standards Institute

Hope that this helps,

Most of the 'skydiving' helmet keep you hair in place, hold your cameras and audibles, and maybe look cool. And provide some bump protection.

But most of the more experienced jumpers use a Protec when they want any level of protecton.

Some newbies jump with ski helmets and I've seen certifications on those. Alway have something weird for the goggles.

Hockey helmets used to be the light weight helmet.

But when I started newbies and others wore open face motorcycle helmets. No reason not to now. My first camera was mounted on one. Some of the larger carbon helmets are almost as big.

I've been looking for a helmet besides a protec for several years. Haven't found it.

If you seach on ski helmets, paragliding helmets you'll find lot of European choices that have various certifications. Some of the paragliding helmets look a lot like skydiving helmets. I assume US legal system keeps them from wanting to come here.

There must be a better idea.

Found this and a company in Maryland that sells them. Anybody with any experience. The visor might not hold up to freefall but the helmet should.
