A message from a inside the Superdome

Recommended Posts

My ex has been stuck in the Superdome since Katrina hit.

The point is he called me minutes ago and said things are very desperate there. He said racial tensions are mounting and fears race riots. He urges all to contact their congress persons and urge them to send military aid ASAP. He said a military presence, NOT military force was needed to alleviate stress. He also said communication in the area is non existant and people don't know where to find food and water, which he said was in good supply.

He said most people were great but 10% were "low lifes and taking over."

Please contact your congress person and urge him/her to send help and urge communication in the area ASAP.

I heard a similar report from a family on tv (in Australia) this morning who's parents are in there. Apparently they had shut themselves in a room with some other people because of the mounting tensions.

The family wants officials from the Australian Consulate to go in and get their parents (and the friends with them) out which sounds so selfish to me. There's thousands of people in there, sending a bus in (if they can even gain access?) to take out select people is the quickest ticket to a riot when tensions are already mounting. I understand people are worried about their loved ones, but they need to get them all out or things will just get much worse.

My thoughts are with everyone stuck in this horrible situation, and those of you who have friends or family effected.

I sent the following message to Mike Bilirakis (my Rep.) Anybody reading this should feel free to copy and edit, if it helps you to get a letter written, or, tell me how I could write a better one next time (as if any of you are shy enough to need a prompt to make corrections!):S

I am writing to highlight the urgent need for a military presence in New Orleans' Superdome, as well as military escorts for the Red Cross and the evacuation efforts, particularly at University and Charity Hospitals.
Racial tensions are rising inside of the superdome, and many inside of the shelter fear race riots. I have heard that the most criminal and violent of the refugees are taking control of the dome, making the need for the presence that much more urgent.
Meanwhile, the workers at University and Charity hospitals have been cut off from aid, the Red Cross will not visit these locations because of the looting and violence in the streets. The staff at these Hospitals are working feverishly to try to keep patients alive, while living on what most would consider very insufficient food rations. They have had to move patients to upper floors to protect them from the looters, and have had to stack the bodies of the dead in stairwells to separate them from the living. Evacuation of these hospitals should be a top priority, but cannot be done without an armed escort with a sufficient show of force to deter any assailants.
Please aggressively use your influence to assure that the desperately needed assistance is rendered before this incredible tragedy is exacerbated by a failure to send the needed help, and keep me informed of how you will act on this matter.

Thank you for your attention
John O'Donnell

Keith,
Have you been able to find out if conditions have improved now that CNN says they are moving them?

Paul called me back shorty after I posted. During his first call he couldn't hear me and wasn't sure he got through. He said things are getting much worse. People are desperate, confused and becoming dangerous. He said he had been moved to the Hyatt next to the Superdome and things weren't any better there. He expected to be on a bus to Baton Rouge "soon."

I'm going to kick his butt when he gets back because he waited too long to evacuate. He tried to get out but the airports closed prematurly, roads were block, and busses were no longer running. To top it off I bought him a cell phone to take on the trip. He's a cellphoneophobe and left it behind >:( I told a friend I was going to beat him about the head and neck with the cell phone when he gets back.

Thanks for asking! I picked him up from the airport Saturday evening. He's a little worse for the wear but doing well. In true Paul spirit, he jumped right into activist mode and has been trying to help out those less fortunate since he returned.
