SarahC07 0 #1 September 7, 2005 Alright, I know this is really weird... but I'm curious to what others think/have experienced, yadada. Laugh at me all you want... I'm on an eating healthy/exercising plan... Here's the damn truth: I'm freakin hungry all the damn time. It's ridiculous! I'm doing 45 - 50 minutes of cardio a day (running for 25 minutes and then 20 or so minutes on the ellyptical) roughly 4-5 times a week ... and I want to eat all the time. Luckily, I'm eating pretty healthy stuff. So, I counted up the calories this evening at 8 pm as I was contemplating a snack and my total was at about 1550 ... but I've really eaten a lot today. If I told you what I ate, you'd agree with me, trust me. Any thoughts? I'm kind of concerned....
cocheese 0 #2 September 7, 2005 Calorie deprivation is a good thing. Drink water.
ebusto 0 #3 September 7, 2005 What exactly are you concerned about? You could start by trying to figure out your BMR (basal metabolic rate), basically how many calories your body needs under normal conditions. If your body normally requires 2000 calories a day to keep your body in a steady state, that is, to not gain or lose weight, then a 500 calorie a day deficit is pretty good. In fact, a 500 calorie deficit is optimal, since one pound of fat contains roughly 3500 calories, so at that rate you would lose a pound a week. Most people would suggest keeping your weight loss to around a pound a week, not much more, assuming that is what you are going for. As for the being hungry part, that is completely normal. Nothing like being on a 14 mile run, with 4 miles to ago, and hungry enough that you are about ready to start gnawing the paint off of the street signs. I've started taking fruit with me for the longer runs. :) Throw in some resistance training, otherwise your body might start to use muscle as an energy source. This would reduce your BMR, which is bad. Make sure you are getting enough protein. Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor, other medical professional, personal trainer, or in any way qualified. windcatcher 0 #4 September 7, 2005 well for one thing, if you work out all the time it's good you're hungry, that means your metabolism is up there. I have heard a lot of people, more women than men, underestimate their caloric intake. Having said that, if you're eating healthy and exercising, make sure you eat enough to fuel your workouts. If you're still hungry all the time, I would suggest adding more calories to your diet so you aren't as hungry all the time. Mother to the cutest little thing in the world... jumpchikk 0 #5 September 7, 2005 You are supposed to be eating about six meals a day... not full meals like we are used to, but small meals. Are you losing any weight? Gaining any muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat, so that's another misconception, but if you are running and doing cardio, you should be losing some weight. I'm a freak... I can eat whatever when I'm running and I lose, lose, lose. Just keep up the exercise and don't worry so much about the eating.
ebusto 0 #6 September 7, 2005 Personally, I agree. Worry more about what your body is capable of (how much you can lift, how far and fast you can run) than what popular culture says you should look like.
