Question for Cat owners

So, my question: Does anyone just have one cat?

Yes - Just one...Here's the deal. I work at home (most of the time) so I got to spend a ton of time training kitty, etc. She's turned out rather well due to the smothering of attention. The last cat I had I got to do the same with and she turned out pretty much the same.

On the flip side...I've had friends who had a cat just to have one. The cat ended up being pretty much a loner, not a people person and was pretty much a bump on a log. I believe this is the stereotype that is probably in your spouses head.

btw, my kitty also loves to ride in the car and gets visably 'upset' if I leave the house without her. It's kinda funny/sad all in the same sense.

Next question: Male or Female

Is one sex better than the other?

Female...Better temperment (although they can be bitter at times)

Really??? I prefer the personalities of male cats. Female cats are too needy for my liking (in my experience). My favorite cats have been big fat boys that like to cuddle with me. :)

Hey don't rule out adult cats, I got my boy when he was 2 years old from a breeder (he was one of her studs who wasn't working out). He is a pure breed traditional Persian who was living with 3 dogs, 4 cats, gerbils, and ferrets. He is scared of nothing but over-baring dogs and can be very playful (loves pull up cords and wagging dog tails) it did take about two weeks for him to completely settle in, but once he was look out cause he would be running to the door to great you with the dog.

Just remember that cats need to be socialized just like dogs do. Oh and it's not odd for a male to think of you as his, my cat loves me and pretty much anyone who comes over but HATES Derek, the two of them plot against eachother.

Let me also recommend right now the auto cleaning litter boxes, yes they are expensive but the keep the house smelling nice and less chance of the cat not going in it cause you forgot to clean it.

An adult cat is a great idea, especially if you are only going to get one!

There are days when I think my self cleaning litter box is more trouble than its worth BUT I have 3 cats and one of them has kidney disease, so that littler box gets a work out! (I have a second regular litter box also and we do our best to keep them both clean so the house doesn't stink and the cats aren't tempted to find other places to go!)

Here is Kat Springs Memnock's My Game (Mem for short) and Foxy chilling on the couch. I'm trying to get one of Sherpa grooming Mem but as soon as I get the camera out they both bolt, almost like they know I'm going to post the pic online as soon as I get it. :D

I had gotten one, but it didn't work correct, so I took it back. It got stuck on the sweep mode and it just kept running. I'm now thinking about trying out another one. With three cats, I'd like to not have to clean the littel box every day. What problems have you had, and what should I look out for?

Mostly clogging up, but I think a lot of that has to do with the extra urine output from my cat with kidney disease. :S When they run all the time, there is usually more litter (overfilled) or clumps than the machine can handle. It gets to a certain point, stops then seems to know it didn't do its job so it tries again. The Littermaid will do that 4 or 5 times in a row then it will stop until another cat uses it, then it will try again. At that point, you need to scoop it out by hand. You also need to use only premium clumping litter- not the cheap grocery store stuff. that stuff won't work at all.

There are a couple of different kinds now, LitterMaid was the first and its probably still the best one out there. (I've got a different kind now, and its definitely no better!)

I had that happen when I put to much litter in mine, when filling I have to make sure to put it just below the max fill line. Also Mem only goes on one side of the box so about once a week I have to use the litter scooper to push the clumps to the other side of the bin so it doesn't fill up so fast.

For awhile to save money on bins every week I would dump the clumps from the bin in the trash and only once a month replace the bin. A box of bins lasted over a year. Now I just toss the bin when ever it is full anywhere from 2-3 weeks.

You think that picture of the cat is funny, check out what I have taught my dog to do:ph34r:

Girls, thanks for the advise on the cat box. I did notice I typed "not" when I meant "now"

I've got a singleton. He's insane. But I don't think that has anything to do with him being alone during the day.

Note: kitties are nocturnal by nature. So during the day, when alone, no big deal: sleep sleep sleep. He has a stuffed dog to beat up when he's awake and he does just fine.

I did the two-kitten thing in college. Tons o' fun. Just more litter box cleaning.

Just don't get a hamster. Hamsters are stupid.

(No kitties were harmed in the making of these shots.)
