it really is a small world

Small world story -

Sophomore year in high school. Went to a leadership conference near Yosemite. Met a cool guy - his name was Martin. Did the penpal thing for a year or so then he didn't write back anymore.

Fast forward 20+ years to last weekend. Hanging with some skydiver friends after a demo at the Mariposa County Fair (about 40 miles from Yosemite). Somehow the conversation turned to where one guy had lived as a kid. He mentioned the name of the town and from somewhere deep in my memory banks I pulled up Martin's name. They went to elementary school together. :o

Only downside to the story is that Martin died before we were even out of high school. Guess that explains why he didn't write back, huh?

So what's your small world story?

Not sure if it's a small world story.

I was out at Pepperell DZ last summer. A group of us went out to dinner and I was sitting across from a guy that looked familiar.

We stated talking, and he was from Alaska but had also lived in Colorado at one point in his life. Turns out it was a guy that I had jumped with when he lived here. He's looks have changed a lot over the years. He didn't recognize me because he had heard that I had died a few years back:ph34r:

:o

Gee, glad you were there to set the record straight huh? :P

As far as me - I don't have a 'small world' story other than running into a kid who I played with in All-Eastern Band at school in Texas... not a huge thing I guess...

I didn't like the high school I graduated from. I only keep in loose contact with about three people, and when I say loose, I mean an e-mail once a year or so.

A few months back, a buddy of ours stopped by with a random friend visiting from Chicago. We sat around the kitchen table talking and sipping beer. When I asked her where she was from, she got the look that all us Mil brats get ("Let's see, how do I explain that I not 'from' anywhere?").

She was a Marine brat who grew up around Air Force bases. We went to the same high school in a cornfield in Illinois. The only person she keeps in touch with is the little sister of one of my three friends. :o

She freaked about the coincidence. I'm used to it by now. :|

I just moved to South Bend, IN last summer. After getting married, Wendy and I moved into a bigger house just south of where we were. Getting to know the neighbors this woman across the street said she had lived there about a year. Making small talk I asked where she had come from and she said Akron, OH. I asked what she did there and she said she worked at Kent State. "Oh" I says, "what did you do there?" She taught in Information Systems. I asked if that was anything like computers and she said yes. I said did she know Steve Schindler and she said "oh sure! Been to his house many times for Chili cookouts. Why?" Well, he's my uncle.

Small world.

1. I had a last minute trip...leaving Thursday morning and coming back Saturday morning...San Francisco to Denver to Toronto, Orlando, and home. Got to the airport 7 am Saturday morning in Orlando and my brother and his family were sitting across fro me in the terminal. I had been needing to have a "reconnection" conversation with him for a while, so it really worked out.

2. In May, I changed a flight from New York to fly on JetBlue, which I never do. Got to the airport and a friend of mine (a girl whom I did her AFF) was standing in the terminal. Turns out she was on the same flight. We got on the airplane and figured out that we were in the same row sitting next to eachother.

Strange stuff.

When I was 16 - 18 I worked at a small hotel in Southern Illinois. Town of maybe 10,000. One night I was working the front desk and a family pulled into the car port. They were all asleep except the father. The father got out and ran in and used the bathroom. A minute later the daughter, my age, came in and used the bathroom. The father walked out of the bathroom, got in the car and drove off. A couple of minutes later the daughter came out of the bathrrom and walked outside. She walked back inside and said, "My damn dad left me!" They were from Chicago about 10 hours away. I called the Highway patrol with the van description and talked to the girl awhile. About an hour later I gave her a free room to wait in. The father came back 3 hours later after the Highway Patrol found his car.

Fast forward 11 years later. I move back to Atlanta and I go out with a friend the a strip club. I pay for a dance and she sits down and we start talking. She asked me, "Where are you from?" I said I've been all over but originally I am from (Hometown), Illinois. She said, "I was in (hometown) once. My damn dad left me at a hotel while I was using the bathroom". My mouth hit the floor and we talked about the irony of it. She gave me a free dance and we are still friends to this day. B|

We live in the Washington DC area. In 1995, we went to Puerto Rico for five days. While I was hanging out at the pool, I met this pregnant woman. When my husband came back to join me, I discovered that the woman attended college with him. Weird.

In 2001, my cousin asked me to attend a wedding with her in Las Vegas. Her husband couldn't come. I had met the groom a couple of times at their house, but did not know him very well. When we got out to Las Vegas and met the other people in our wedding group, this guy looked at me and said, "Hello Sarah."

It took me a minute. It was one of the freshman math students that I tutored my senior year of high school. His name was Brian. It's a very small world!

Small world,

Worked with someone in San Diego from '88 to '95. While in Las Vegas last year, went to see Blue Man Group. Who ends up sitting right in front of me, same person.

Never know when that penny is going to show up, so be nice.

Walking down a street in Siagon in 1968. Someone yells at me by name. I look around, don't see anyone and keep walking. The third time, the guy says "Look up here asshole!" On a third floor balcony is a guy from my hometown who is in the Air Force. I was in the Army. What are the odds of him being on that balcony at the same time that I walk under it?

Blue skies,

GASP! I LOOOOVE your new avatar!!

I just 'met' a dude on another forum who's actively working with two of my very good friends. I'm beginning to think military small world stories don't count as much - they're too easy.

vaguely similar to mine....

Was in a Paris trainstation with my (former) foster parents (long story - I have 3 moms and 2 dads). We were looking at train times to visit Givirny, but didn't go. We talk to a group of young people and tell them we're from NorCal. I tell this one girl with a German accent that actually, I'm from Santa Barbara, Goleta to be precise. She says she knows where that is. I think, WTF! No one south of SLO knows where Goleta is even though the UCSB and the airport are there. I tell her where I went to High School and if she knew anyone there. She named a brother and sister I've been acquainted with since Elementary school. It turns out that she is best friends with their cousin.:S

More recently, during a firedrill at work (corporate HQ, 2500 people), I talk to a person who I find out is the niece of my wrestling coach from High School. Keep in mind that this is NorCal and High School is in SoCal.

I grew up all over; went to high school in Rio de Janeiro. Just about 20 years after graduating from high school, I and another woman at work (in Houston, TX) determined that the reason each of us looked so familiar was that we had gone to the same high school.

Seems like I have told this one before ...

I was working for Hughes Tool Company which was located in East Houston. One morning on the way to work, a woman turned left in front of me from the middle lane after we had crossed a bridge. Luckly I saw her coming and slammed on the brakes and stopped as her truck crossed in front of me by mere inches. She never saw me.

The more I thought about it the angrier I got. At the next light she was in front of me, so I jumped out of the car went up to here window and knocked. When she rolled down the window I started yelling at her. Luckily the light changed and she drove off.

Just before noon I went down to the company cafeteria to donate blood for the annual blood drive. As I walked in, I make eye contact with the woman from the truck! It is obvious that she has told all the blood drive people the story because she said something and they all turned and looked at me.

It was the longest, most painful blood donation I have ever made....

Blue skies,

Jim

you just reminded me about something...

Me and my ex-girlfriend decided to get a hotel room. walked in to book the room while she was at work so i could get it all set up. The lady at the counter asked how many occupants. (2 i reply). Reason for stay?, she says. me not wanting to say the real reason... Work related. What company will u be staying for? my reply.. umm (still had my work shirt on so) I work at _________. she said her uncle worked there. I asked what his name was. When she told me his name I realized he was a Business Unit Manager with the company. My response was "He is one of the big bosses, but not my boss." bout 2 weeks later a guy work with comes up to me and tells me he herd i was spotted at the hotel with some chick in a nurses uniform. He wanted to know if she was a "call girl". :D I told him no and asked how he found out and a lil birdy told him. for the next 2 weeks i had people asking me about it. Just laughed it off and everytime i passed her uncle in the isle i smiled and said "whats up Monty?" :D

So what's your small world story?

After I first started skydiving I was on AOL and started a "Skydiving in Arkansas" room. The first person that came in said he lived in Arkansas a long time ago but had moved to Phoenix. Turned out he was the first boy I ever kissed!!! :D

Oooh....then I ran into my Girls State roommate in the Louvre....

Mine's so small, it's even DZ.com related.

I was talking to one of our California regional sales managers a couple of years ago.....first time I had talked to her. Her last name is VonNovak, so on the off chance, I told her I had once met a skydiver named Bill VonNovak from San Diego, and asked if she had heard of him. She said "Yes.....he's my nephew." B|
