Floats18 0 #1 September 16, 2005 Man, that Arnold can sure go head down. That and it was amazing that he cut away his main and still landed w/ his three rings hooked up after deploying his reserve @ 30 feet. Not to mention that his rear float exit was KILLER! Did actual skydivers do the mid-air footage? You'd have to pay me a LOT of money to wrap myself up in a round. I did see that they used a vector container, I wonder how they worked that out.--- and give them wings so they may fly free forever DiverDriver in Training
riddler 0 #2 September 16, 2005 Hollywood doesn't have to portray reality to sell movies - they only have to play to peoples' limited understanding of a subject. I believe that most whuffos think that modern parachutes are round. Sometimes I still see modern movies where the hero/heroine jumps a round parachute (and I ain't talking about jumping pilot rigs, either) Seems like it wouldn't take much to just talk to one or two skydivers, have them look at the film segment, and critique it for accuracy. It still might not be perfect, but it would probably be much closer. When I was a kid, it was commonly thought that placing poodles in a microwave would make them explode. One movie came out in the 80s, where a poodle was placed in a microwave and exploded. Sadly, several people decided to go home and try it with stray or neighbor's animals. They don't explode, but they do die. Sometimes I feel stupid just by watching a movie and participating in the total lack of common sense. But I am kinda glad that Arnold got elected. Means he can't make any more movies for a while Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
Bolas 5 #3 September 16, 2005 Some movie do their research though. I was watching a Tom Clancy movie with an old ham radio friend of mine when they intercepted some cellular signals in a scene. He told me the frequency the receiver showed they were listening to was accurate. Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh. happythoughts 0 #4 September 16, 2005 Skydiving work is often listed as a "second unit" group. Norman Kent was involved in the camera work. Guy Manos is listed as a "coordinator". A lot of people met Norman at WFFC this year. Sitting and bs-ing with him in the boarding area is a good way to find out interesting stuff of this type. Floats18 0 #5 September 16, 2005 If real skydivers were involved, why did they use a round 'chute? My only guess was that they wanted it to look like a bailout, but if it was a bailout then why the reserve? I know its just a movie, but as someone who's tried to get large groups of people to escape their misconceptions... inconsistency SUCKS Plus, this is probably why my parents think I'm trying to kill myself--- and give them wings so they may fly free forever DiverDriver in Training
riddler 0 #6 September 16, 2005 Quote Plus, this is probably why my parents think I'm trying to kill myself Too true! It seems like most people I know that think skydiving is dangerous don't know anything about it, other than from movies. Well, in movies, skydivers are usually on a deadly assignment, getting shot at, having parachute malfunctions and narrowly avoiding death. Maybe they should make skydiving a normal part of every Disney movie, and have the "action" sequences be when the characters are driving in cars, or walking around in their houses.Trapped on the surface of a sphere. Quote I know its just a movie, but as someone who's tried to get large groups of people to escape their misconceptions... inconsistency SUCKS I've been renting the Beach Blanket Bingo movie series. Surfing looks fun. QuotePlus, this is probably why my parents think I'm trying to kill myself My dad actually did a round jump in the Air Force, so he understands that you can live through it. When my step-mom was alive, she told my dad that she wanted to do a tandem (at 72, with a knee replacement). Everyone else thinks it's a bad idea though. MikeJD 0 #8 September 16, 2005 Like most Hollywood skydiving scenes, it's nonsense but it's pretty entertaining. Some of the footage obviously is of a genuine jumper - if you watch it closely it looks as though he's wearing a full-head rubber Arnie mask, which I think is hilarious.
