happythoughts 0 #2 September 16, 2005 Someone suggested it last year. Then someone else did the math and discovered that a hurricane has more power than a nuke. To move millions of gallons of water (at 7 lbs/gallon) at 90 mph takes a lot of energy. Also, adding water vapor to a storm was not progress.

ninjaswooper 0 #4 September 16, 2005 Naw naw naw, see heah now... we just have to outlast these mighty storms, use more fossil fuels, and eventually global warming will melt the polar ice caps. Said melting will eventually alter the warm water currents which feed these monsters and we will have prevailed! The Bush admin's energy policy is simply taking the fight to the hurricanes, just like invading Iraq is taking the fight to the terrorists. It's quite impressive strategery, even if I do say so myself.

diverdriver 6 #6 September 16, 2005 C-5 loaded with dry ice. Start dropping and collapse one side of the hurricane. It's worked well on landmass thunderstorms by collapsing them in 5 minutes with a C-130 loaded with dry ice. A C-5B should do the trick. Good point, you'd think the government would have already been using that idea if they thought it could be done. BillyVance 34 #14 September 16, 2005 Reposting this from a thread in SC: http://www.weatherquestions.com/...is_cloud_seeding.htm "REDUCING THE INTENSITY OF HURRICANES THROUGH SEEDING? In the early 1960's, the National Hurricane Center began a series of experiments in seeding of hurricanes to reduce their intensity. Since the most destructive hurricane winds are produced from hurricanes with the smallest diameter eyes, STORMFURY seeding flights tried to stimulate the growth of a new eyewall of convection outside the inner, more destructive eyewall. Unfortunately, the project failed. It has since been determined that there are already an abundance of ice crystals in hurricane rain systems, so the production of new ice particles through cloud seeding probably has little if any effect.
