untoldfox 0 #1 July 23, 2008 Hey guys and girls I finished my AFF a couple weeks back, did 4 coach jumps and a few solo jumps on my own, I'm still jumping a larg canopy, going to jump a 190 this week some time. I'm 6 foot and weigh in around 175 lbs. people have been saying a good sized first main would be around 150 upwards to 190, 150 being quite small and fast, so I'm thinking a 170 container with a 170 that could fit a 150 would be a good idea?.. input? now, I'm having a hell of a time finding used gear on this site, first you have to find something that will fit your frame, then it has to have the right size main in it, which I found one yesterday, but it sold yesterday! so.. I don't want to go all summer jumping student gear. I'll go broke.. is there any other websites out there that have used gear for sale? is buying new that much more? what is a good new rig that is on the cheaper scale?.. and if i do that I'll have to put a main and a reserve in, i could buy used but that means I have to find it on here, make sure its not sold, then get it shipped here. my god, this is hard. If your searching the classifieds and happen to find soemthing that would fit me, feel free to post the link! cause ive been emailing everyone one of those adds and I haven't found one yet! what should I do? Chubba 0 #8 July 24, 2008 Quoteso I'm thinking a 170 container with a 170 that could fit a 150 would be a good idea?.. input? That's what I've been told too. I'm 170lbs exit weight so that would put me exactly at 1.0 which would be good for the first few hundred jumps. Check your local area for riggers, I found one that deals in gear too and at worst case he said I can stop in for a gear check before I buy anything else. If you have a big budget it seems pretty easy to get sweet gear.

You're going to be 200-205 pounds out the door which makes a 200-205 the minimum reasonable size at this point in time. With practice a 190 gets reasonable with 50 jumps, a 170 at 150, and a 150 around 250 jumps. I only know one person who followed Brian's wing-loading-never-exceed formula and still got sidelined with broken bones and she'd probably have been fine if she'd taken a canopy control class. I'd guess 1/4 to 1/3 of the guys I know who didn't follow the chart have become acquainted with the paramedics and orthopaedic surgeons. Mostly it's been tibia/fibula and femur fractures although there've been a few broken backs. Bigger guys fly less responsive canopies at a given wingloading, but don't have proportionally stronger bones than little people so they tend to break more when the little guys bounce and walk away. http://www.bigairsportz.com/pdf/bas-sizingchart.pdf You'll probably get bored with the bigger canopy before you master it but this isn'ta big deal - you just sell it and buy another used canopy. If you got a reasonable deal you're only loosing $1/jump in depreciation no matter how many times you change. If you shop around you can even make a bit of profit. In any event, it'll be more exciting than being broken and stuck watching daytime TV (even prescription painkillers don't make daytime TV watchable). countzero 7 #10 July 24, 2008 the container that cost the least new in a Dolphin. also remeber that containers can have the harness resized. so that may be an option for used gear that needs to fit better. also let as many people at your DZ know your on the lookout for gear. riggers, instructors and fellow jumpers ect... and post a Wanted ad on here and at your DZ. someone may see it and be able to help you out. get as many feelers out there as possible. best of luck on your gear search.diamonds are a dawgs best friend
