Employment issue/question

Can an employer legally require you to provide information on your schedule outside of work? (FYI - State of Wisconsin)

I've tried to find a website that gives the info, but don't know exactly what to search for. :S

I don't know, do you have a more specific example???

I know I ask our top management team to give me contact info when they go on vacation or something - just in case... They have so much info in their mind that I might need on an emergency basis... They don't seem to mind as I try NOT to bug them, and if I do, I apologize profusely... But they are team players and freely offer to help knowing that if I call the "life line" I really need their info.

If an employer wanted to know your approximate geographic location, when you were off work, to call you in, in case of an emergency, I think that is fair... Now, you probably are not legally required to say "yes I can help you guys out of this pickle" - and they probably can't fire ya if you say "no"... But, in the spirit of team playing and helping out when they need a hand, it seems like a fair question to ask... That way, if there is an emergency, they know who to call first by who can respond the quickest...

Can they? I have no idea. If my employer wanted to know where I was going to be on my time off I would ask him why he needs to know and then I probably would tell him to piss off. Your a big girl I'm sure you will do just fine.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!

I have done that before. The boss asked a few of us if we were going to stay around town on the weekend off and was wondering if we could go on a road trip if nessasary. I have no problem there. But he never asked exactly where I was going to be just if I was sticking close to home where I could leave on short notice.

It's not due to an emergency nor is it me going to be gone on vacation.

It's a situation where they are wanting to interfere with my schooling and they were told up front that I was going to school and that it was my priority and that is the ONLY reason that I was accepting a 3rd shift job. They were totally ok with it until after I started working for them.

However since they hired me, they are now starting to have an issue with my schooling and are trying to demand the information as to when my classes are. My classes in no way, shape or form interfere with my work schedule. I'm out of work before school starts by 1 1/2 hours and out of school before work starts by 4 hours so there is no issue there.

I guess I'm just trying to find a nice and polite way to tell them "nonya" without getting fired as I do need a paycheck. [:/]

I have been both the employee and the employer... I know it is a privilege to work for a company, they don't have to employ ya...

If you want to work, it seems a fair question of them to ask, "what is your class schedule?" I would give them a detailed breakdown of the "class hours" and "study time hours" so they can accommodate your needs. If they can't accommodate your needs, time to find another job... You need not justify which classes you are in, or why you need those study time hours... Just that you have them. Perhaps a plan A and alternate for the study time???

It is not like they are asking who you are going to dinner with or something personal... They are trying to book your time. In the world of people calling in sick when they are not, employers are put in a hard spot these days.

Just my point of view.

(Oh, by the way, our employees are encouraged not to lie and call in sick - we grant lots of "just because" time off... Last Friday a top manager took some time off because a department store had a sale... No dock to her salary, she will make up the time when she needs to... Culture is important. Employers who do not realize people have lives and sometimes need time off with short notice are just setting themselves up for a shitty culture.)

True - they do not have to employ me just like I do not have to have them as my employer.

I work from 9:30pm until 5:30am. There is absolutely no reason for them to know what I am doing from 8:00am until 5:00pm. Do you see where I'm having the issue?

I've not yet decided how I'm going to handle their request. I'll probably respond back with a question of why do they need to know since my school hours are not in conflict with my work hours.

And just to let you know...there are other companies and employers that I would have willingly gave the information to because I trusted them enough to do so and knew they wouldn't try to screw with me. For various reasons, I do not have that trust level with this company.

As to job searching...I am.

The wireless (and clueless) company I worked for until the end of July recently sacked a fellow contractor for losing work due to a legitimate medical emergency that included an ambulance ride. >:(>:(>:(

Good idea... They might have a reason you have no clue about that actually makes sense....

I have no clue what your job is... If you are doing manual labor of some sort, they really are just using you as a resource. If you are in management or have access to proprietary info, they have the right to know what you do in your life, to protect their intellectual assets... For an example, another company I worked for, required us to document every other "side job" we had to make sure the company policy of "no working for our competitors or any other company in the industry" policy was followed. Made sense since I had the administrator password to the server and had access to every employee's salary AND every customer's buying habits.... And they were paying me for my services and wanted exclusivity as customers could have hired me direct and they would have lost the money they invested in marketing my services as part of their company.

So, I guess what I am saying is, it sounds like you don't trust your employer, so that is the root of this problem... As you said, you are looking for a new job, which is a good idea if you are in so much distrust with your current employer you don't even feel comfortable sharing your class schedule with them.
