boinky 0 #1 September 24, 2005 Although it looks like most of us have been able avoid any major ill effects from Rita, there will still be high winds and possible spawned tornadoes for a little while. I would like to do my part to educate our group and keep us alive to skydive for many years to come. Tornado SafetyNina Are we called "DAWGs" because we stick our noses up people's butts? freeflir29 0 #2 September 24, 2005 Yes............when there are tornados I like to stand outside and try to catch a glimpse of them and possibly get video. If it comes close though then it's time to cower in a closet somewhere.

boinky 0 #6 September 24, 2005 I personally don't think you should be out there at all. Storms like that are very unreliable. You never quite know what they are going to do. Just be safe hon...I was just teasing you.Nina Are we called "DAWGs" because we stick our noses up people's butts? nate_1979 9 #7 September 24, 2005 Nice thing about Tornadoes is that they have such a small damage patern, .. I have seen a couple of them in person while on the road, they are really something to watch.... Just be ready to take cover if they do change path FGF #??? I miss the sky... Now... a few years ago at Gold Coast Skydivers, I did see a funnel cloud poking out of an isolated thunderhead 10 miles south of the DZ, while I was in the plane on the climb to altitude! How rare does that happen? Oh yeah, we jumped too! skydiver51 0 #10 September 25, 2005 Alot of people say they would rather live where there are hurricanes or earth quakes than Tornadoes. They evidently don't know that tornadoes can occur almost any place in the world. And since tornadoes have such a small path it's not as hard to get away from. Shotgun 1 #11 September 25, 2005 Yeah, I remember seeing something about a tornado near L.A. and thought that was really strange. But I looked up some stuff about tornadoes in CA, and apparently it's not that uncommon (though I don't think they've really had any big destructive ones). Having lived in TX most of my life, I've seen a lot of funnel clouds, but I've never seen a tornado that was actually on the ground. (I should be careful what I wish for.) The only tornado that really scared me was the one in Jarrell in 1997. It seemed like there were tornado warnings all over the area that day (I think there ended up being six that touched down), and the weather outside was going nuts. I had my mom, my sister, and my nephew all huddled up at my house, waiting to go down in the basement if we needed to. (But I kept running around outside to see if I could see anything, of course). skydiver51 0 #12 September 25, 2005 Yeah, for those of us who live in tornado alley, running out side to watch themvery common. When the F3 300mph+ winds came thru OKC, barely missed the base I work at. Those are VERY scary ones. They even suck the grass off the ground.
