GTAVercetti 0 #1 September 29, 2005 From the Post Express: A Halifax, England, hospital has banned cooing at newborn babies because of fears their human rights were being breached, the Press Association reported. Calderdale Royal Hospital prohibited people from asking mothers about their babies or looking at them in the maternity wards -- because, it said, these actions disrespected the babies' dignity. The staff even created a doll that carries the message, "What makes you think I want to be looked at?" "These are little people with the same right as you or me...people sometimes touch or talk about the baby like they would if they were examining tins in a supermarket," said hospital manager Debbie Lawson. -------------------- At least we know that PC zealousness is not just an American trait! So, what, since we cannot even LOOK at babies, does that mean we cannot look at adults anymore? Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing. masterrig 1 #2 September 29, 2005 Seems to me, ignoring the child and not paying he/she attention, would have worse reprocussions than paying the child attention. I would think, not giving the infant attention would lead to later feelings of in-security and probably turn the child into a 'cold' adult. I say, coo and ga-ga goo- goo the kid and tickle it's little tummy. Hell, I don't know. Chuck

JohnMitchell 16 #4 September 29, 2005 Stupidity has plumbed new depths. Babies thrive on human interaction. That's how they learn to speak, think and love. This is not the first time the medical community has made completely asinine policies, nor will it be the last. Bet they are pro gun control, too. JohnMitchell 16 #6 September 29, 2005 There are social norms for looking at each other, and it varies some from culture to culture. Most have no problem if someone looks at them. It's minor social interaction. Staring brings a whole other message. It's more like stalking. Some people with an antisocial bent would probably object to even being looked at. I would guess they were given very little attention as babies. Have you ever raised children? Trust me, they like to have attention paid to them. It's as natural as breast feeding, which also bothers some people.
