I'd say that's a good comparison. Most injuries/fatalities in our sport occur under a perfectly good parachute at landing. "Swooping" is a discipline where skydivers dive their parachutes towards the ground to pick up great speed before leveling out only inches above the ground. The effect is a nice long 'surf' along the ground before touching down. It is clearly the most dangerous discipline practiced by many. My Karma ran over my Dogma!!! We did a Mr. Bill out of a King Air. After he opened, I attached the line to the chest trap of his student rig and rappeled down to almost the end of the line. He started turning. I slowly picked up speed until I was swinging at the end of the line at about a 45 degree angle. The canopy looked really odd; it looked like it wasn't sure how to handle the strange loading. Finally I rappeled off the end of the line. It was really creepy, because that's been one of my big fears in climbing for years. The outside video guy got a little too close and clipped the rappel line with about two outter most cells. he ended up getting his foot tangled in his lines and cutting one (finally) It was a great video. Of course this was at the same dz where Hookitt and Brits had their (in)famous crew jump. Never look down on someone, unless they are going down on you.
