Well it's about time we got some fresh meat around here!

Can you share your women? We never seem to have enough.

We're not neanderthals, we can't speak for them. You'll have to ask yourself.

Start by getting them drunk. About a 90% success rate .;)

See? Skydivers and Rockclimbers have more in common than we thought!

:D

Is there any particular skydiving move or style that noobs see in movies that 90% or all sane respectable jumpers view as reckless, pointless and stupid?

it's more that things happen in movies that can't possibly happen in real skydiving. Several minutes of freefall and carrying on converstaions in the air (Point Break). An instructor jettisoning a student without a parachute, carrying on a 15 second conversation, then catching that student in freefall, hooking him up to a tandem harness, and landing him safely (Drop Zone). Actually, the most realistic portrayal is probably the first jump course in Fandango, although I think the freefall time after he discovers his main parachute is actually yesterday's laundry is probably a bit long.

That's Autralian style rappeling to climbers. Looks good in the movies, great if you're a commando who needs his gun pointed down as you rap into an LZ, but generally viewed as about the dumbest thing you can do.

Why would you say that? I love to Austrailian rappel and doing it from an overhang cliff that is 150 foot down to the bottom is just plain fun. Granted it could be a little harder on the rope than just creeping down but where is the thrill in that. LOL

Other than that it is just as safe as any other type of rappel except you brake in front of you instead of behind you. Granted it is not a rappel for beginners because you need to commit and do the rappel in one move from the top of the overhang to the bottom of the cliff or you will do a flip on the rope but many good rappellers whether going frontwards or backwards do it in one bound just for kicks and grins. Of course I agree its stupid to try and do it dwon a rock wall even though I have seen it as I'm sure you have.

Exactly. I've rappeled (feet first, of couse) several times when climbing to get down from multi-pitches or to get down faster or safer than hiking down, but I wouldn't rush into Aussie rappeling, if I were going to try it. I'm not even an adrenaline junkie at all, but I know fellow climbers who have done it and know how to do it safely.

Edited for typos.

A) because you're face first and therefore more likely to take impct on your face instead of your ass if something goes wrong.
B) because all your vital safety gear is BEHIND you where you can't see it.
C) if done with a "figure-8" device it is much more likely to end up with a cross-loaded carabiner, making the above point even more critical.

Like I said, I'm not sure if there is a jumping equivalent. Generally speaking in the RC world Rappelling is considered by many to be the most dangerous aspect of the sport. (Personally I think it's alot of fun, but that's a different story) And going "aussie" on rappel is adding even more risk to an already perilous activity.

This is exactly what happened in the link I posted above. If the kid who died had rappelled ass first, instead of face first, he'd have seen his gear get tangled and would likely be alive today. As it is (I won't get into lengthy explanations) one piece of gear levered awkwardly against another and broke, removing him from the system almost immediately.

But hey! This is supposed to be a fun thread! Who's got a cheesy poof? Post me some porn!

Still looking for a Lady to make a Nekkid Reverse Rodeo Jump with me:ph34r: What would be the equivalant "Must do (it this way) before you Die" for a Climber?

Hey J_ung,

I did look at the article you posted and it looks like the person made the mistake and it wasn't the gear. Any gear whether skydiving or rock climbing needs to be understood or accidents/death can occur. Nobody likes them but hopefully they can be learned from. Before any rapell happens ideally the carabiner is loaded from the standing end and there isn't any slack that would cause the rope to go over the gate. I'm sure you would agree that under no circumstances do you want the rope over the gate. However, like you I would rather talk about boobies or better yet see new pics of some RC girls, lol
Think of how stupid the average person is and realize that statistically half of them are stupider than that.

Boy whoever took the pics of the naked rock climbers had something on their lens because there are these black lines that cover parts of the pictures ;) I'm glad HH doesn't have a camera like that on this site :)

Yeah, we've got a pretty strict no nudity thing over there. So, where exactly is this site... ahem...
