Breaking Bonaduce

Recommended Posts

I must admit, I am finding this program to be fascinating. I do not often watch reality tv shows. I especially do not watch shows focused on "celebrities," although the one with Brigitte Nielsen and Flava-Flav was interesting.

But Breaking Bonaduce on VH1 is simply a stunning piece of television. Rather than the PR-publicist version of a public persona, this one reveals the workings of a sociopath. The introduction has him describing himself as a "Car wreck, and everyone has the right to slow down and watch a car wreck."

The last episode I saw revealed Danny Bonaduce speaking with the therapist (who appears to have had some decent plastic surgery - I also am shocked a psychologist would ever actually allow cameras in on a therapy session) about starting off this series. Bonaduce said he did it for the paycheck and the notoriety, but that he never thought that this show and the therapy would actually end his marriage. He said something to the effect of, "This therapy did its job and made my wife come to her senses."

The show has revealed plenty about Bonaduce. The damnedest thing is that it shows a guy so self-aware, yet unwilling to really change. And now he's shown suffering.

I don't often recommend television shows, but I recommend this one. It's dark, twisted, and certainly paints this guy in a bad light.

Yet, why am I somewhat compassionate towards him? Why do I think I would personally get along well with him. Maybe it's because he and I are so different.

Or maybe it's because I see some of myself in him. That scares the hell outta me.

I worked for Danny for just a bit over three years while he was here in Chicago.

The man is very self-destructive because he has always had everything given to him and people are willing to rescue him everytime he f's up; thus he feels he has free range to do whatever he wants almost without consequence. On top of it he has a terrible need for attention and his destructive behavior lends to him getting attention. A lot of what he does is an act - this persona he has is what the majority of the world sees (alot of his personal choices are planned out to help get him more attention). He does have an addiction weakness that is very real as you can see on the show - but his chosen lifestyle helps him stay around those influences. The man can party more than most I have ever seen and I have partied right along side him and have some great stories. His party lifestyle helps generate the majority of the stories that help him get attention....can you see how circular this is? Therefore this show and VH1 are just playing up to his wants/needs so they can have a show and people can watch much like a car wreck.

I've seen some of these shows. There is something compelling about watching. With a life so destructive, I have to wonder why he is doing this...solely for the money? I haven't seen all of the shows so far, and just happened to get drawn in while 'flipping' through the channels.

edit: Okay, I just read the previous post, so it's not just the money but for the attention.

That is part of it as well. What's really sad about all this? The man is incredibly smart. Then again, that helps him plan this all out.

btw - I can retell almost all of his stories verbatim....he has been telling the same ones over and over for years. Go back and watch the VH1 special on the Patridge Family and you will see he has repeated them there.

I see how circular this is. The damnedest thing is that he sees how circular it is, too. When he said on the show that he is teaching his kids not to be like him, I found that striking. Hell, I learned from my dad how not to be, and I certainly don't want my son to be just like me, either.

It's amazing seeing a guy like that break down into tears, though. It means he IS suffering from consequences. But he keeps on going.

I really wouldn't feel sorry for the guy...he knows what he is doing. He knows how to put on an act...he is a better actor than he lets on. Are the tears real? I have no idea but don't really care anymore. Most of the stuff he is revealing he used to say in primetime over the air in Chicago on a daily basis.
