Duckwater 0 #1 October 5, 2005 I took two of my girl friends kids to little league football practice today because one had surgery and one was painting the house. I took ones 7 yr old daughter too to keep her out of her hair. I follow these kids around and never let them out of my sight. After practice, they all wanted to play on the jungle gym. I was watching one when I see the little girl swing from a rung of the monkey bars and fall face first from horizontal at about 4 ft. I was 2 ft away and immediately pick her up....She holds up her right arm and I immediately know it is broken. I get someone to take the one kid home and drive to Baylor Medical Center...... I have to make the incredibally difficult call to her mom to meet us at the hospital...After she fell, I grabbed her forearm and it went back into place. She cried for a while but on the way to the hospital she stopped crying and there was no swelling so I thought I might be imagining things. I took the son home so he could go to bed and stayed there waiting. They get home and her arm is in a temp cast and both bones are broken and she has to go see the orthopedic tomorrow. I am sick to my stomach. I know that it is in no way my fault but I am about to throw up. It happened on my watch. If she has to have surgery, it will make me even more sick. I wont sleep tonight. Im on my first beer. --

sinker 0 #3 October 5, 2005 oh man... so sorry you exp'ed this... try not to beat yourself up so bad though... you can't keep your eyes on them constantly... even if you could, you couldn't prevent all injuries... just know that kids heal very well. try to find some peace man. -the artist formerly known as sinker
Duckwater 0 #4 October 5, 2005 These arent just any kids...I see this little girl on a daily basis. I didn't go over to see her yesterday and she was mad at me. Her mom called me on the way home and wouldn't tell me the outcome because she said her daughter wanted to tell me. She walks through the door and is proud to show me her cast and sling. (future skydiver) She says it doesnt hurt at all and I tuck her in to bed. I have to leave after that. She is the coolest little girl, really. I still feel like shit. On my 2nd beer. --
highfly 0 #5 October 5, 2005 Hey Duckwater. Try not to fret about it. At least it was only a an arm and not her face that needs surgery. Some kids bounce and some kids break. Its not your fault, its not he kids fault its just "one of those things" that happen. You couldve been 10ft away and the same outcome wouldve of happend. www.myspace.com/durtymac
Keith 0 #6 October 5, 2005 Don't kick yourself too bad. Kids get hurt and they heal. I know how you're feeling though. When my nephew was around 4 I was babysitting while my sister and Mom went christmas shopping. He fell and clunked his head on the corner of a computer cabinet. He wound up with several stitches. I had to make the same call you did to my sister telling her to meet us at the hospital. I felt like shit. We all got over it and he doesn't even remember the incident.Keith Don't Fuck with me Keith - J. Mandeville

JohnMitchell 16 #10 October 5, 2005 You know what? You were dong a good job. Kids fall all the time and get hurt. I should know, I have four of them and they have all been to the emergency room at one time or another. Sounds like you did a good job getting the little girl to the hospital and reassuring her on the way. No one likes to see little kids get hurt, but it happens, and what matters is how you take care of them when it does happen. My youngest broke her arm at Grandma's house, falling off the slide. We never held it against her. It happens. Just help them heal up again.
 SBS 0 #11 October 5, 2005 You're such an asshole. I had been in the room 2 seconds prior to that and left the room to put away laundry. IT HAPPENS!!! Kids will be kids. Short of duck taping them to your side they are gonna fall down, climb things, jump off things, etc. You should see the looks and whispers you get when your 2 year old walks around with a tiny cast and sling... They would come home with bruises and bumps, but psyched about the great time they had playing with their Aunt. I teased my sister about it, and she felt horrible, but I assured her that kids get hurt. I am sure that the little girls mom understands that and doesn't blame you at all. You could have put them all in front of the TV during the whole day. Would have hem risked an injury? Probably not. Was it the right thing to do? Certainly not. Kids need to run, climb, jump, swim,... to develop a decent body coordination. This is not without risk, but so is life. Her mother is even making jokes about "are you gonna hurt my other kid?" I am totally over it and I am glad I was there to pick her up. I hugged her a little tighter though. --
 Join the conversation You can post now and register later.
