Anvilbrother 0 #1 October 10, 2005 I am looking for plans or tips for an outdoor fireplace. I already have a in ground piped natural gas bbq pit, so this will strictly be for fires. I have a 4X4 spot already formed and pored around with concrete. All I know about building one, is I need to use firebricks, and the right type of morter. Any help or plans would rock! azureriders 0 #4 October 10, 2005 IMPORTANT NOTE: Concrete will explode if you build a fire on it. I have been in residential construction for 15yrs and have saw this proven many times. Its just like throwing a rock from the driveway into the fire and wait for it to get extremely hot and then it pops, sending ashes and coals all over the place. Now think about how many rocks are in concrete. It can be quiet dangerous. But like you said, you must use fire brick and mortar and be sure to cover the concrete with a layer of those fire bricks. Other than that I dont have much advise, just be careful
JohnMitchell 16 #5 October 10, 2005 We have a concrete fire ring in the backyard, a 24" diameter sewer coupler. Think that'll stand up to the occasional bonfire? I guess it really doesn't mater if it does crack, though.

Anvilbrother 0 #7 October 10, 2005 I am a firefighter, I know about concrete and "spawling". It is not going to be built on concrete, I have just already poured the spot where I am going to build the fireplace around. Postes r made from an iPad or iPhone.
