Moving to Austin; place to live?

Recommended Posts

Well I'll be damned...all those years ago that you flew for my first jumps and you very well may end up flying my last jumps. I'm looking to retire in Austin when I finish my military career (granted thats still 8 years away), so I'll most likely finish jumping out there as well! Talk about full circle...;)

I moved around a lot when I lived in Austin, in various parts of the city, but I found that I am partial to the downtown/south central area (pretty much the 78704 area). I rented two different apartments at Congress Square Apartments, and I liked living there. They are pretty basic (though they have a little bit of character), but they are in a great location - walking distance to the Town Lake hike & bike trails (one of my favorite things in Austin), Auditorium Shores, and lots of good restaurants and several cool bars (Continental Club & Ego's). It is also pretty close to the 35 freeway, so that would make it easy to get to St. David's (I think) or to go to San Marcos.

If you want something a little bit nicer (in that same area), you might check out The State House on Congress or 1007 Congress - I'm guessing both of those would be around the $1000 range for a 1 BR, but I'm not sure what the rates are like right now in Austin.

Of course, you might hate all of the hippies and pseudo-hippies that live in South Austin, so I guess it depends on your personality as to which part of Austin you'll like. ;) But, as you can tell, I'm partial to the "SoCo" area (the part of South Congress that is closest to downtown).

Congrats on the new position, and welcome to Austin. I live in Round Rock, north of Austin and love it. It's right around the corner from a park with a hike & bike trail. There's some nice apartments off of Parmer and 1431 that are a little "out of the way" from where you may be looking for, but quiet (and close to me :o). I'm not too fond of the downtown area, or South Austin.. I lay my head north! Good luck!

Man! There must be a bug going around or something. How strange that you just replied to my thread about us moving out there and now here you go! I guess I'll see you out at SSM. Best of luck to you.

Where will you be working--near the airport? Austin traffic may not be quite as extensive as Houston traffic, but it's still BAD, so you don't want to have to drive crosstown all the time. Try to find a place that doesn't require you to use IH-35 all the time. I used to live near Loop 1 (Mopac) and 71/290 (Ben White), and it was really easy to get anywhere from there. If you give me some more specifics about where in Austin you want to be, I can give you more specific suggestions.
I don't have an M.D. or a law degree. I have bachelor's in kicking ass and taking names.

My neighbor is looking for a roommate and he has a house. I live in a suburban neighborhood. I think all he is asking is $500 a month and everything is included. And we are about 10 miles from downtown. PM me and I can get you more details if you want. He does have a dog but he is a really sweet dog.

But there are several appartment complexes that are nice and resonably priced. Stay away from Riverside Drive it is pretty ghetto.
