If you jump long enough, you see someone...

Recommended Posts

Well, today was the day... My one year anniversary in the sport will be a day I never forget.

I hoped to never see it...

Here is an e-mail chain that went back and forth (most recent at the top) last Thursday. I now must ask myself after I have seen it first hand, will I ever view the sport the same again, and how now has my attitude changed since I sent these e-mails last week???

10/16 is not a good day for Colorado... Two years in a row.

But Steve said it well, and now it is worth repeating.

Travis,

I couldn't agree more with you attitude. Congratulations on making it through your first year. Now stick around for like 30 more!

I'll always have a spare closing loop...... whenever you need it :-)

Steve,

Sunday is bitter sweet for me...

It also is my 1 year anniversary in this sport.

I remember going to my uncle's birthday party that night and telling my family... The looks on their faces...

The next day I get a call from a worried grandmother after she read about the incident in the newspaper. As I was reading about it online, I get a call from my office manager, she would be out for a week to go to a 4 way funeral, to go burry her sister in law, brother in law, and her two nephews, after their car was run over by a DUI with multiple previous DUI offenses, and as usual, the offender walked away from not only the crash, but the trial...

It seemed the day that I started skydiving, death was everywhere to be seen. It hit home at my office, and hit home in the Colorado skydiving community.

I never knew Scott and Joel, but I know a lot of people who do. I am sure they were wonderful people. I kept skydiving even though there was death all around, because I knew life does not come without risk, and someone drunk driving could run me over at any time too... If anything, my office manager's tragity reminded me to live now, and not wait, because you never know what tomorrow will bring.

Doesn't the saying go, it is better die living then be living while dieing, or something like that.

Anyway, I thought I would just drop a note to say your e-mail was well done, and reminded me of why it is special to be here, on earth, with my friends, and skydiving. Oh, BTW, my closing loop is all messed up, can I borrow one. ;-)

Thanks.

Travis

Sunday will mark a sad anniversary. One year ago, a terrible accident took two of our friends from us. I hope that all of you who had the pleasure of knowing Scott and Joel will take a moment to remember, and to smile at those memories.

I'm acutely aware of how fleeting friendships can be. I hope that all of you will take a moment this weekend to appreciate the incredible opportunity we have been given. We can fly, and we get to fly with the finest people I've ever known.

Tell your friends how much you love to fly with them, and cherish this opportunity.

Thank you to all my sky-friends. Thanks for teaching me, flailing through the air with me, and listening to me. Thanks for the cold beers at the end of the day, the ride back to the DZ after a long spot, or the spare closing loop. Thanks for everything, big and small.

Just do me a favor......Stick around.....I want to jump with all of you for a long time to come!!!

-Steve

Remember that when we post here, we are effectively speaking directly to the media, because they do read this site and have reported based on what has been said here. Information on incidents might be best waited on until after we get the official report. In the meantime, we can keep an eye on the Incidents forum.

actually people are bein really good about not posting anything in the incidednt forum yet, those of us that were there have agreed not to talk but rather wait for the report to be released. the media has put out some info already but was incredibly innacurate.
