GiaKrembs 0 #1 October 19, 2005 Has anyone out there traveled using AMTRAK??? I am looking at going via rail to Eloy for the holiday boogie, it's only $71.00 round trip using AMTRAK. Is it worth the savings? Or should I just forget about it and drive (approx. $200.00 in gas). g Raddest ho this side of Jersey #1 - rest in peace brother Beth lost her cherry and I missed it .... you want access to it, but you don't want to break it. NWFlyer 2 #3 October 19, 2005 Haven't traveled on them out here (west coast) but did quite a bit on the east coast. More comfortable than a bus, usually not quite as sketchy, can walk around, buy food, use the bathroom (they're usually not as gross as on a bus). I'm a fan of rail travel. I guess the other question is are you willing to give up the flexibility of having your car once you're in Eloy..."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. GiaKrembs 0 #4 October 19, 2005 Quoteare you willing to give up the flexibility of having your car once you're in Eloy That will play a major factor, knowing that we'll be in the middle of nowhere with no transportation makes me a lil uneasy... But not having to deal with Holiday traffic sounds REALLY nice. Also, I've never traveled via rail before and it intrigues me. The money really won't be the deciding factor (just a bene)... as my alternative is Shanghai right now hmmm, g Raddest ho this side of Jersey #1 - rest in peace brother Beth lost her cherry and I missed it .... you want access to it, but you don't want to break it. skycat 0 #6 October 19, 2005 I haven't done CA to AZ, but I did do ND to TX in college and it wasn't to bad. Just make sure you don't have to switch trains in Chicago to get to Eloy. Truthfully it was a really good way to travel, I could do homework, study, read, and now that I have a laptop I could work on that also. Depending on how that leg of rail works there is a good chance you won't have any stops till you hit Phenix, I know I didn't from Chicago to Dallas.Fly it like you stole it! As far as comfort, ease and all that, it is fine. But, you better be prepared to be delayed. If you do not have ALOT of flexiblity in your schedule, DO NOT take Amtrak. I was 6 hours late on an Amtrak trip that was only 13 hours long. Thought it was a fluke, but left on time out of Chicago coming home and was 5 hours late by the time I made it. Amtrak is the bottom of the barrel in train world and will get pushed to the back of the line at every junction and stop. YOU WILL NOT BE ON TIME.
 seekfun 0 #12 October 19, 2005 GiaKrembs, I know this isn't representative of Amtrak's service, but I had a horrible experience travelling from Milwaukee to Denver once. The temperatures were so cold that the brakes kept freezing on the train. On two ocassions, they flew maintenance crews out in helicopters to thaw the train's brakes. Personally, I don't know how the cold can stop a train but not a helicopter, but it happened. On the return ride to Milwaukee, the train stopped in Chicago and could go no further, so they made us walk--with our luggage--three blocks to the bus station and take a bus to Milwaukee. Personally, I don't know how the cold can stop a train but not a bus, but it happened.
