NWFlyer 2 #26 October 20, 2005 QuoteThanks. Guess I'll try the jeweler route again (Breitling's web page directs information requests to retailers). In the past, jewelers have always told me "Well, I'm pretty sure you'll be ok with this one...you should buy it". Pretty sure doesn't justify the kinds of prices higher end watches demand, and none of them seem to actually *know*. Maybe you'd have better luck calling a watch repair place since they're more accustomed to taking the things apart and might have more specialized knowledge."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. Pretty sure doesn't justify the kinds of prices higher end watches demand, and none of them seem to actually *know*. You'll need to. Breitling (as most other watches in this class) has specific, qualified dealers and I've never seen them in anything other than high-end jewelers. I recently received a Breitling Superocean Chronometre as a gift. I took it back to the jeweler where it was purchased to get it sized and was amazed at the service I received and the knowledge the salesperson had about every watch they had. I haven't found this elsewhere. Beware of "I'm pretty sure you'll be okay with this one". -C.
artistcalledian 0 #30 October 20, 2005 The first "decent" watch that i bought was a Breitling Navitimer Olympus. I had the watch about 2 weeks and the winder broke and couldn't be wound manually.... back to the factory it went to their credit, they sent me a new one in replacement in just under 3 weeks. i had that one about 2 months and noticed some "stuff" (not really sure what the foreign object was, looked like a bit of fluff from a cleaning cloth) on the under side of the glass. Took it back to the shop and they sent it back to Breitling... came back fixed after about 2 weeks. After another month, i noticed something AGAIN under the glass, looked like some of the luminesent paint so the watch went back AGAIN to the shop....off back to Breitling it goes... This time they send me another new one (3rd watch at this point) and after another month, i notice YET ANOTHER foreign object on the inside of the glass, back it goes AGAIN.. this time the owner of the shop says that he'll ring the OWNER of Breitling (a guy who was a Count of somewhere, i forget his name) as he once met him at a watch convention and got on with him so well he had been given his phone number !!!! he rang the owner of Breitling and explained what was going on, This Count Von somebody, goes down to the factory, picks out another black faced Olympus by hand, sends me it over by special couier, along with a certificate for a free service, a Breitling back pack (not available to buy anywhere) a free crocodile strap to go with it, and a free folding clasp for the strap. I was like "fooking hell" what a geeza !!! and you guessed it.. this watch also had a foreign object on the inside of the glass after a couple of weeks. Aparently they have had a "bad batch" made and they were all returned to the factory. I got my money back from the shop at this point and bought a second hand Jeager Le Coultra Sold that and went back to a Navitimer which has SO FAR, been ok http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v77/cosmo1111/arm.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v77/cosmo1111/newwatch2.jpg Pateks are the dogs knackers though one day..oh yes, one day a Patek will be mine mwahahahahahaha________________________________________ drive it like you stole it and f*ck the police
lifewithoutanet 0 #31 October 20, 2005 That sucks, but they did right by it. That's a pretty sweet watch. I'd actually been looking at the Superocean and Superocean Chronograph. The chronograph was just huge, so I decided against it and came close to buying the other on my own a few times, but just couldn't part w/ the dough. Glad I didn't. -C. livendive 8 #32 October 20, 2005 QuoteWatches are magnificent pieces of art. I personally am in to Patek Philippe. They are nothing short of perfection. Definitely a different style than most, as I personally don't prefer metal bands or clunky watches. Check them out, the Calatrava is a nice place to start, and there are several stores in NYC that have beautiful vintage Pateks. Holy crap! START?! I like the look of the Calatrava 5296, but then I found a price for it. Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)
artistcalledian 0 #33 October 20, 2005 to put things into perspective... i was told this... not my words... Rolex make 1 million watches a year, Patek Phillipe make 25,000 a year Patek have a little man who sits in his white robes all day just checking every cog under a powerful microscope, if he find a single flaw, whether thats a tiny scratch on the cog, or a bur between the teeth of the cog, or anything in fact... he chucks it in the scrap bin and they don't use it I think there are only 5 manufacturers who have gained the Geneva Seal for every watch they make http://www.timezone.com/library/itsabouttime/itsabout631674732705524456 Rolex patak phillipe Jaeger le Coultra not sure of the other two though ________________________________________ drive it like you stole it and f*ck the police
Casurf1978 0 #34 October 20, 2005 QuoteWho on here is really into watches? i used to have a Jaeger Le Coultra Master Geographic in rose gold, but sold it and now have a Breitling Navitimer World with a blue face. come on folks, what ya got? Both are really nice watches. I have a Baume & Mervier Capeland S. The one I always wanted is the Blancpain Air Command. I pretty tough on watches and need rugged ones. calledisrael 0 #35 October 20, 2005 i never used to wear a watch, until i got my suunto. it was too interesting to be able to read the altitude and the barometer all the time. life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all. (helen keller)
Kid_Icarus 0 #36 October 20, 2005 Dave...I mean.. we are talking "Nice" watches right... They are works of art and they tell time. Rolex is dime a dozen. I just don't get them. But to each their own. I am a fan of simplicity and elegance. I think no other watch exudes this aura than Patek. ________________________________________ "What What..... livendive 8 #37 October 20, 2005 Oh I understand, and I think the watch in the attached picture is pretty damned attractive...But $17,000 seems like quite a bit for a piece of jewelry (especially for a man). Kid_Icarus 0 #38 October 20, 2005 Oohhh... i like that one! It is expensive. But think of the things we buy for our SO's... Ask for a nice watch for an anniversary... It is spendy, however watches like that hold most of their value forever. ________________________________________ "What What.....
Broke 0 #39 October 20, 2005 I like watches, but I can't afford the ones I really want. Becides for the time being I am trying to save money for skydiving, and laser eye surgery. My present watches are a Swiss Army watch I got it in 97. This thing has been through 4 watch bands, 1 crystal, and it was run over by a car once. It is my every day wear watch. My other is a Fossil that I got a good deal on... nothing too impressive though, but it dresses my wrist up a little bit. I also have a Russian Military Surplus watch that I use as my in case I forgot my watch at work watch. I would really want to get something more high end, but its not in the cards for me right now.Divot your source for all things Hillbilly. QuoteEach Blancpain 1735 is assembled by a single watchmaker from start to finish, a process that typically takes more than eight months.
