Going North . . .

I saw a PBS thing last night about the head of Mexican family who lived in a small modest home in Mexico with his wife and four children. He's a nice man, his wife is adorable, and the children are cute and happy.

But there's no work to be had in his town and the land won't raise anything.

What this fellow does is leave his family for a year, comes North to work, then goes back until the money runs out. Then he does it again. The story of how he made his way to Chicago is like something out of Europe in WWII.

The worst part, and it had my crying through the whole thing, was when the day came for him to leave on his journey North.

He's kissing and holding his wife, the kids are clutching at him, and Grandmamma tells him to remove his hat so she can bless him. He opens the door and stops for a minute. He says a silent prayer and then walks out the door without looking back.

What's wrong with this world?

Mexico, needs to do something about it's Northern States, instead of ignoring them and the inhabitants. It seems as though, they leave that to the United States. JMO I can see this going to SC!

I can answer my own question. It's greed. I don't have much, but I could get by on a quarter of it just fine. How some can see suffering and not be moved by it just eludes me.

I've seen enough of it, in real life and yeah, it bugs the hell outa me. It's not right and it's not fair. Sometimes, I've found life just ain't fair. I don't know what I can do about it. The world leaders, are supposed to have those answers. I think, it gets into the control of wealth and power and that's too bad.

In my mind, it's not so much an issue of whether people are "moved" by suffering but of what the answers to this suffering are. Giving 3/4 of what you have will not solve the problem I don't believe. And there's really nothing wrong with some degree of suffering. I, personally, pretty much come from where the rubber meets the road. If you have a problem, you do your best to solve it. If that guy's problem becomes too great to bear, he'll come up with a different solution.

how many kids did they have?

it really annoys me when people have kids and then can't afford to support them. I've got an answer for these people who can't feed their kids... don't have them in the first place !!!!!!

Some people think its a right to have as many kids as they want, and don't even give a second thought to how they will feed and clothe them. You then end up with a large family on the dole (benefits) and everybody else has to pay for their keep, and feel gulity with bleeding hearts about how shite their life is.. blah blah blah

Big deal, this mexican gets off his arse and does what he needs to to feed his family... why not? he had them, he should do what ever to feed them... its not rocket science (mind you, i once said that about solid fuel jet propulsion, and somebody said.. actually it is rocket science )

too many people with bleeding hearts in this world, all going on about how tought people have it when these people just happen to have spawned 8 times with out giving a thought on how they will look after their kids

Damned good point! I really didn't want to get into it, too deep and make this place look like SC. I think, there's some religous beliefs involved and about birth control. They don't believe in it. In the end, we pay a big chunk of the cost.

Was it their fault for losing their jobs after they'd started families. How is it different for this Mexican guy? He is doing the best he can, how he can to provide for his family.

i'm not sure of what great depression you're talking about as i don't know your history in much detail, sorry about that, but a depression is nobodies fault, so you do what you need to do to feed your family, whats wrong with that?

If you've had too many kids without giving thought on how you can feed them, i've not got much sympathy... if you had kids when everything was good and then, due to no fault of your own, life kicks you in the knackers... then you still have to get off your arse and do what you need to do. you can't just sit their and go "well, its not my fault i'm in this predicament, so i want a nice free ride please" get out there and do what ever it takes to feed your kids (work in a supermarket stacking shelves if you have to)

there are always jobs out there (ok, they might not be well paid, thast life) I've been lucky in life in that i've always managed to be in a job since i left school in 1982, but i've got out there and got another job when i needed to, i'd do anything to pay my mortgage... i've got an ok job right now, but if i got made redundant tomorrow, i'd go and work in Burger king if it meant keeping a roof over my head

And while we are talking about suffering. how about the dude in america that looses his job? The boarder jumper can afford to work dirt cheap. He comes to america and works for one year. Then takes all the money he has made up here down thier to his own economy, meanwhile someone in america who cant afford to live on that kind of money is out of a job and standing in the welfare line to feed his kids! That is the part of this thing that makes me F-ing sad

Taking care of people sneaking across our border should not be our problem! If, their native nation would do that... we wouldn't have the problem.
If, they would like to go through the proper processes of entering this country... maybe.
