novacaine 0 #1 June 11, 2008 So, in the next month, I am planning on getting my first rig setup. To which I am a little stoked about. I am just waiting for the cypres to come back from SSK, before I bring the rig for a repack. Though, I was talkng with the rigger at my DZ about getting a repack done in the next few weeks. And he asked me what reserve I had. I told him that the reserve was a Rascal 202 and it had come with my H/C. I am worried about his remark, which was "I never heard of it." So now I am wondering, if I ought to replace this with something newer before my cypres arrives. As if my riggers has never heard of the the chute, I have been wondering if that is an early sign that this chute is no good. What are your thoughts? Thnx! Edited for spelling! councilman24 37 #2 June 11, 2008 These and others from this manufacturer and the preceding (or subsequent I can never keep the timing right) were popular with some folks because they were cheap. And cheaply made? I heard rumors. Here is the manual. http://www.parachutemanuals.com//index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=0&func=startdown&id=225 This is a reserve I would highly recommend replacing, even if it inspects okay. The only ram air I've ever found that failed a tensile test was a stable mate of this one (same manuf). And it only failed in one small area. If you didn't test it there you wouldn't find it. There were other contributing factors to the failed area but it still failed and others haven't exposed to the same conditions. Dropzones tend to have favorite gear. And unless this is someone who has been rigging awhile they may never have run into one, even if there were some in your area. They were never a widely popular or distributed canopy. I would choose not to jump it. And because of my experience I choose not to pack them. Another rigger choosing to pack it isn't wrong, just has a different opinion.I'm old for my age.
