Rumor-TX Dropzone Opening in IN???

Recommended Posts

I heard rumors of one in Smithville Tx about an hour east'ish' of Austin
But thats just a rumor I heard

The one in IN would be the one a former DZO of a major tandem operation in Texas would be bringing his twin otter too.
But this is just a rumor also

You heard correct!!!;) The last I heard is, they've poured the slab for the hangar. It's going to be primarily a 'tandem factory'! I personally, know both the owners.
(edit to add) 2 - Cessna - 182s and 2 - brand, spankin new Strong Tandem rigs with Set-400s.

So no Turbine? The market in IN in the past has been fairly crowded for the area. I hope the best for anyone thats opening up a DZ in the midwest.

Opps, on reread see that you are talking about another DZ in TX.

That's O.K., Phree! You still, got what needed to be said, out there. I couldn't imagine anyone making it in your part of the country without a turbine... or two!

It's going to be an awfully slow assembly line in that factory with just two small Cessnas. More like a garage workshop...

I'd have to agree. All they can see are big $$$ signs. Like you were saying, with 2 - Cessnas, that's only 2 - Tandems at a time. I don't understand why, they think they can do so good there, with Houston to the East and Austin to the west and both places have bigger and better aircraft.:S

Up-date: The hangar is just about complete and the exact location will be the airport at Smithville.

That star has no relation to Skydive San Marcosin Fentress or to Smithville whatsoever.
Smithville is 13 miles east south east from Bastrop on Hwy 71...like the VDoo says. That makes it about 35 miles east of Austin-Bergstrom Airport.
The Smithville airport is known as Smithville-Crawford Airport. There is a new approximately 5,000 sq ft hangar under construction there. Reportedly two Cessnas will be housed there for the skydive ops.

I will be moving to that area soon. Do you know if they are going to teach SL? Their set-up sounds a lot like the one in Beaumont where I jump now and I was just wondering if I could possibly continue my training there.

Mapquest says there are two Smithville's in Texas, both somewhat close to each other, and the original message here mentioning it didn't say which one. So I was trying to clarify. It looks like I picked the wrong one.

Thanks for straightening things out.

New map attached.

So, southeast of Skydive San Marcos about 30 miles? (The red star on the attached map.)

Sorry, I'm late getting back to you but, I've been out of town working cattle.
Yes, sir! That's where it's going to be. The 'plan' is, to do 'MOSTLY', tandems. The hangar, is supposed to be close to completion at the Smithville-Crawford Airport. They 'may' do static-line jumps but, the emphasis will be tandem.

You and I know that.;) The one ol' boy who is in on the new DZ, has seen a lot of 10-12 tandem days. He's thinking that, the Smithville area will mean even more tandems. I'm in agreement with you. To really 'make' it, I think, they need something just a bit bigger than 182-Cessnas. Like , maybe an... Otter?:D Maybe later...
