Rebecca 0 #1 November 4, 2005 Since this is a multi-talented, semi-omniscient crowd, I figured some of you must know something about furniture. I'm looking around for some actual home office furniture. That card table ain't doin' the trick anymore. I am totally willing to spend the money for quality, but I am not willing to pay for brand name mark-up. Pottery Barn has good looking stuff, I'm just not sure it's worth it (does the quality match the price?) Anyone have any tips, guidelines, recommendations for getting a nice furniture without that extra markup? you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk? yardhippie 0 #2 November 4, 2005 I bought my chair at walmart. its quite comfy, and its real leather. my last computer desk I bought there too. it was ok, but it did look a little cheap. Id check out the high end stuff and find the features you like, then look for some of those features in less expensive pieces.Goddam dirty hippies piss me off! ~GFD "What do I get for closing your rig?" ~ me "Anything you want." ~ female skydiver Mohoso Rodriguez #
airtwardo 7 #3 November 4, 2005 Check the want ads! Around here anyway, people are fairly affluent, and move around quite a bit, selling their furnishings before they go....I've found all kinds of almost new high quality stuff...for 1/2 the 'store' price! ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~
Ashtanga 0 #4 November 4, 2005 If you want good quality furniture at a reasonable price I like IKEA. But I also like Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware but it is a little more $$.
wmw999 2,589 #5 November 4, 2005 I'm a big believer in second-hand. It's so ubiquitous that places like Salvation Army stores won't even take desks because they get so many of them. The weekly swap-n-shop here at NASA almost always has a couple of things listed -- lemmeno by PM or email if you want me to look. Rebecca 0 #6 November 4, 2005 Ooh! Good ideas Jim and Wendy! Nate, call me a snob, but IKEA's not my idea of a furniture shop (great for other stuff though). I'll try the Houston Chronicle ads first Wendy, but if that fails, I'll take you up on the swap-n-shop idea. Thanks guys! Remster 30 #7 November 4, 2005 Quotebut IKEA's not my idea of a furniture shop You have to pick and choose at Ikea. Some is decent quality at a great price, some is just cheap-ass low quality stuff that wont last more the a couple of years.Remster

I feel like a GIANT sometimes with I 'test-drive' the furniture there! Slappie 9 #12 November 4, 2005 QuoteActually, it depends... Some of their tables are higher then the US standard. I bought 2 "desk" there. They're very plain, no drawers. You buy little cabinets that roll up under them. They've got glass tops, pretty sturdy. I'm very happy with them. I do however have to say they're higher then my office desk at work. That said, this has served me well for years. Its strong as hell, indestructible, and cool looking......even functional. http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10101&storeId=12&productId=25905&langId=-1&parentCats=10121*10390
