lawrocket 3 #1 November 6, 2005 No, not me. My 15 year old brother did on Friday night while playing football for his high school. Apparently, he went up for the pass and got speared in mid-air. His femur snapped before he hit the ground. (Proud brother I am - he held onto the ball for the reception). He's now got titanium! So, I'll be down to see him next weekend. What are some things I can do to help him? What can I tell him to expect. Furthermore, what are some good things I can do to cheer him up? I can't think of a better place to go to for advice on broken femurs! My wife is hotter than your wife.

mx757 4 #4 November 6, 2005 be sure Drs put him on a blood thinner.. when I broke my femur in car accident in 1980 I devleoped blood clots which traveled to lung.. I stopped breathin for a bit nurse happen to be in room when it happned..could have killed me... the doctor that checked me out afterward was surprised to find that the doctor that set my leg (had a rod put in) did NOT put me on blood thinner. he said its pretty common to do.. for femer injurys.. TomAiello 26 #6 November 6, 2005 Femurs are actually pretty good to break, in terms of long term prospects. Since a break in the middle of the femur isn't on a joint, it's likely he'll recover to full function fairly easily (not like breaking an ankle joint, or spine or something). I know guys who've had broken femurs and had no troubles a while down the line, where broken ankles and such give you trouble pretty much for the rest of your life.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
swedishcelt 0 #7 November 7, 2005 Just tell him to do what the Dr. says and get him something like Netfx or something while he is in cast... and not to walk before he is supposed to... and his parents not to send him to school until Dr. totally okays it, school is a freaking dangerous obstacle course nowadays... jonstark 8 #14 November 7, 2005 an old friend of mine femured in the sixties tethering a PC to a phone pole on a winded out day. He packed the bone with dirt when it compounded. He fought his bowling ball size and weight fall rate problems for years as well as osteomielitus (sp) in that leg. He finally broke it for the third or fourth time and they just took the thing off mid thigh. Gone were the fallrate problems and the bum leg. Just had to relate that old femur story... jon

I fell off, snagging my left foot ont he "saran wrap" they use to keep the bales together on the pallet ( i was standing on one, unloading a double stack next to it). when my right foot hit the ground, I couldnt hold my weight on it and collapsed to my knee. the kneecap acted like a wedge and SPLIT the femur at the joint. *OW* *OW* *OW* *OW* *OW* it still hurts even thinking about it. thought I was ok, and tried to stand. bad idea. next thing I knew, I was laying on the ground with medic standing over me asking if I knew my own name. that was over 15 years ago, and year by year, it gets worse. I cant stand on that leg partially flexed without it hurting and wanting to collapse. So the nature of his break is extrordinarily lucky, whether he knows it or not. so remind him it could be worse. Does he have just one rod? Or did they stick another in the neck & head of the femur? I have two rods in my right leg from my most recent break. I am just over 4-Months. The recovery is slow. Tell him not to rush it. Let it come naturally. Listen to the physical therapists. (Physical Terrorists! ) According to my current Doc who treats U.F. Gator players I should be able to be back in full action in two months. Might want to get him a stress ball for the pain. I use them. It helps a little. Tell him to get out in the sun. It helps the bone heal. The recovery will be slow and painful. There is no doubt. Where did he break it? Mine was near the greater Trochanter. Let him know that there will most likely be an unusual pain down the front of his leg. This is normal and from the metal in the middle of the bone. There will be a groin pain as well. Possibly an issue with his IT band. It runs on the side of the leg attached at the hip and just below the knee. For those who do not know: Femurs usually do not get casted. The rod is what assists in the healing process. I do like the cheerleader idea though. That would definitely help any male. I hope this helps a little. Oh and one last thing. UNderage or not buy him a shot! He deserves it for hanging on to the ball! Laters, K-MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! .The REAL KRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMER! "HESITATION CAUSES DEATH!!!"
